As awards season inches ever closer to the big finale at the Academy Awards next month, it seems that some of Hollywood’s stars have run dry of sartorial inspiration for the red carpets – at least if the ensembles on display at tonight’s SAG Awards were anything to go by.
The film and TV industry’s biggest celebrities turned out to celebrate the prestigious awards in Los Angeles this evening – with many of them putting on an incredibly glamorous display on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony.
But, as always, there were multiple attendees who totally missed the mark when it came to their choice of award show outfit, with some eschewing the glamorous dress code altogether, while others simply went way too far with their choice of daring designer looks.
Leading the worst-dressed list at this year’s SAG Awards was the usually-stylish Michelle Yeoh, whose strapless black dress looked as though it had pieces of straw superglued to the front of it.

Upon closer inspection, the actress’s straw-like embellishments were actually tiny lengths of gold sequins
Rooney Mara’s bizarre frock closely resembled a wedding dress worn by a Harry Potter character – and the flowing lace train looked somewhat like a pair a net curtains
Julia Garner was channeling the Little Mermaid in her rather unflattering frock, which had shell-style pieces covering her cleavage and a tacky metallic train that resembled the kind of material that might be used in a Moulin Rouge-themed costume
British actress Sheila Atim looked as though she had ripped up a giant button-down shirt for her skirt, while the corset-style shirt would have been better suited to a Madonna concert that an awards ceremony
Babylon star Li Jun Li took the phrase ‘dare to bare’ to extreme lengths when she arrived in a see-through dress that flashed more than a little glimpse at her nude lingerie set
The risque dress was just as ‘cheeky’ from the back as it was from the front
The bizarre creation appeared to have a somewhat elegant silhouette that was completely obliterated by the crinkle-cut pieces of fabric that closely resembled the end of a bale of hay.
To make matters all the more awkward, when the on-screen star claimed the SAG Award for female actor in a leading role, the straw-style embellishments on the front of her dress scratched against the microphone, causing some unpleasant feedback as she was trying to give her acceptance speech.
Another normally-fashionable red carpet attendee was Rooney Mara, whose black-and-white lace dress very closely resembled a wedding dress worn by a character in a Harry Potter movie thanks to the bird design on the front.
The black tassels that hung down from just one section of the front of the design also made it look as though the gown was slowly falling apart as she made her way along the carpet.
Another person who went very over-the-top with their look was Babylon star Li Jun Li who took the phrase ‘dare to bare’ to extreme lengths when she arrived in a totally see-through dress that flashed more than a little glimpse at her nude lingerie set underneath.
The glittering ensemble was more mesh than dress – and the see-through material was made all the more risque by the bright camera flashes on the red carpet.
Then there was New Amsterdam star Jessica Frances Dukes, whose dress featured an incredibly uncomfortable-looking high-neck feather collar that looked as though it was about to swallow its wearer whole.
But if the designer behind the frock went over-the-top with the fabric on the neckline, it’s only because they were able to scrimp on the rest of the gown, which had an enormous cut-out section at the front, leaving the actress’s cleavage on full display, while a thigh-high slit flashed plenty of leg.
Overall, the effect was just one of discomfort rather than elegance.

Comedian Megan Stalter flashed back to 90s punk style in a leather corset that was wrapped over a baggy dress – leaving the whole thing looking very mis-matched and disorganized
The Parent Trap star Elaine Hendrix put on a dapper display in a tux – however the look was given a rather morbid edge courtesy of her Morticia Addams-esque makeup
Patricia Arquette’s dress was a lovely pale green color but its ill-fitting design and horribly creased material took away from the overall finish
While Julia Garner certainly attracted attention with her dramatic new hairstyle, her blunt white-blonde bangs failed to distract entirely from her metallic dress – which looked like the top half had been crafted from a Little Mermaid costume while the glitzy red train looked as though it had been made from spare fabric obtained from a Moulin Rouge dancer.
The beaded mesh design that covered her shoulders and décolletage looked more like an ornate fishing net when paired with the shell-shaped pieces that covered her cleavage – and the sea-theme was continued with the pleated fish-style embellishments protruding from her elbows.
British actress Sheila Atim chose a dress from a similar color palette, opting for a deep burgundy design that featured a skirt and crop top.
The skirt was the main attraction in the look… but it would have been better placed inside a circus tent than on a glittering red carpet.
It looked as though it had been fashioned from swathes of material purloined from old button-down shirts that had simply been tied around her waist, while two enormous cuffed sleeves made it look as though she had borrowed a 3XL shirt from someone on the way to the ceremony.
The look was then finished off with a rather tacky-looking corset-style crop top that featured Madonna-inspired cups and a rather garish red trim.

Kai Smith opted to make a mockery of the dress code by turning up in what appeared to be a costume from the 1997 movie Good Burger
TV host Janine Rubenstein’s tasseled dress would have been better suited to a beach bar than a glittering awards show
The Whale star Hong Chau’s very ill-fitting frock did little to flatter her figure while the two ripped pieces that hung down behind her made it look as though the dress had been attacked with some scissors just before the event
Joely Fisher’s voluminous dress did little to flatter her figure and the huge sleeves gave it a kind of dragon-like quality
Damian Young’s crumpled look made it appear as though he’d leapt straight off the couch and onto the red carpet
Comedian Jordan Firstman’s over-sized pants made it look as though he’d accidentally bought a suit three sizes too big – and he added more bizarre touches in the form of a grill and a chainmail glove
The chainmail glove was covered in metal letters – and Jordan added a creepy contact lens to complete the bizarre look
The White Lotus star Beatrice Granno’s dress was a world away from the skimpy ensembles that her character sported in the hit HBO Max show – quite the opposite in fact.
Her black frock had a non-existent silhouette and absolutely swamped her trim figure, while the plunging neckline left her at serious risk of suffering a wardrobe mishap as she made her way into the awards ceremony.
Meanwhile the actress’s wet-look hair made it seem as though she had just climbed out of the swimming pool at the luxury hotel featured in the show that turned her into a household name.
TV host Janine Rubenstein also looked as though she had just strolled out of a beach bar, wearing a tasseled purple dress that looked somewhat out of place at such a prestigious award ceremony.
The Whale star Hong Chau’s very ill-fitting pale pink frock did little to flatter her figure thanks to some bunching around the mid section.
Meanwhile the lingerie-style dress also featured two ripped pieces that hung down behind her and made it look as though the design had been attacked with some scissors just before the event.
Comedian Jordan Firstman is known for his incredibly entertaining Instagram posts, but when it came to the red carpet at the SAG Awards, he took the joke a little too far with his over-sized suit that looked as though it was three sizes too big.
The comical look was not helped by the addition of a grill on his bottom teeth – nor by the chainmail glove that he wore on one hand.
