Russell Crowe gives George Burgess a career lifeline by casting him in new Hollywood film… after he was released by St George Illawarra following rehab stint for gambling issues

Hollywood actor and Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe has helped out rugby league star George Burgess by casting him in his new film.

Burgess, 30, parted ways with St George Illawarra last month following an inauspicious return to the NRL.

He shared a photo to Instagram on Wednesday of himself in military uniform on the set of the movie, titled Land of Bad.

Burgess is playing the role of Private Cooper, reports The Daily Telegraph.

This isn’t his first film role, as he made his acting debut in 2019 thriller Locusts before landing a role in sci-fi thriller Ascendant in 2021.

Land of Bad, which also stars Liam and Luke Hemsworth, is being filmed on the Gold Coast.

It comes after St George Illawarra released Burgess from the final year of his contract.

When he joined the Dragons after two years back home in England, the former South Sydney forward became the first man to play professional rugby league following hip resurfacing surgery.

But his comeback was overshadowed in March when he was charged by police with sexual touching without consent.

Burgess later checked into a rehabilitation facility to deal with personal issues unrelated to the criminal charge, for which he is facing a hearing next year.

It’s believed the personal issues related to gambling.

He made two appearances for the Dragons’ NSW Cup side in August following his time away from the club.

A month later, his twin brother and former Souths team-mate Thomas told AAP that George was keen on an NRL return.

But the Englishman left the Dragons having made only four first-grade appearances and facing a challenge to play NRL again.

‘The Dragons thank George for his contribution to St George Illawarra and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,’ the Dragons said in a statement.

The Dragons have signed Zane Musgrove as a replacement for Burgess after the Wests Tigers prop secured a release from the final two years of his contract.
