Rod Stewart candidly revealed the BBC had made him sing football anthem Sweet Caroline seconds before he performed the tune at the Platinum Jubilee concert.

The iconic singer, 77, left fans unimpressed on Saturday with his raspy rendition of the Neil Diamond track – with BBC viewers claiming he had ‘butchered’ the famous karaoke song.

Finishing up a jaunty rendition of Baby Jane, a relaxed Rod then spoke to the crowd: ‘This is a fun one for me to sing, the BBC made me sing it. Join in, make it comfortable for me.’

The star then launched into his powerful performance of the classic song – which left the crowd dancing but fans unimpressed.

After the show, Rod revealed he and his back-up singers all recently recovered from Covid-19 after jetting back to the UK in the middle of his US tour.

‘I just came home especially for this, and I got Covid and I got over it! All six of us got it, we’re just glad to be here,’ he said.
