‘It p***ed me off’: Queen Latifah, 52, reveals a personal trainer told her she was in the ‘category of obesity’ as she explains BMI measurements are outdated as they are based on 19th century data
Queen Latifah recalled being ‘p***ed’ after she was told by a female personal trainer that she was in the ‘category of obesity.’
The 52-year-old actress shared the embarrassing incident when talking to Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris on Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, according to People.
And the former rapper explained that the trainer was basing her information on the BMI index which is outdated.Â

Latifah began the conversation by noting that she had begun working with a personal trainer whom she described as ‘scientific and mathematic.’
The Grammy-winning performer then stated that the individual surprised her with the assertion that she was obese.
‘She’s showing me different body types, and she’s telling me, this is what your BMI is, this is what your weight is, and you fall into this category of obesity,’ she recalled.

She stated: ‘I was mad at that. It p***ed me off. I was like, “What? Me?” I mean, I’m just thick. She said you are 30% over where you should be. And I’m like, “Obesity?”‘
Latifah and Smith went on to discuss how the BMI system was rooted in racial and societal biases.
The media outlet noted that the ‘ideal’ BMI measurements are based on the body of a white male from the 19th century.
It was also pointed out that gender, ethnicity and body makeup were not taken into consideration when the measurements were being drawn up.

Latifah previously spoke about physical well-being during an interview with People, where she expressed that she placed great value on fitness.Â
‘Health is most important to me. It’s not about losing weight or gaining weight. When I want to lose weight, or gain weight, I know how to do it in a healthy way,’ she said.
The performer then remarked that she wanted to see a difference in the way that physical well-being was discussed in the future.
