NYC commuter, 20, is dragged to his death on subway tracks after his ‘clothes or backpack’ got trapped in closing doors at Upper West Side station

  • The southbound 1 train at the 59th Street station struck the passenger at 5pm
  • Investigators believe either a bag or piece of clothing got caught on the doors
  • Early in the year, two people were shoved onto the tracks and another stabbed
  • New York said it will increase the presence of police officers in the transit system

A 20-year-old New York City commuter has been killed after he was trapped and dragged along the tracks by the closing doors of a subway car at an Upper West Side Manhattan station on Monday.

The southbound 1 train at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station struck the passenger at around 5pm after trapping him, according to law-enforcement sources.

Investigators speaking to the New York Post believe either a bag or piece of clothing got caught in the doors.

Emergency responders declared the man dead at the scene. No criminal activity is suspected, investigators said.

‘A person on the tracks was hit by a train and our thoughts are with his family, the train operator and riders who witnessed this tragedy,’ said New York City Transit President Richard Davey, according to Fox5. ‘We will get to the cause and learn any lessons that may emerge as there is no higher priority than safety.’

‘While the investigation is in its earliest stages, it appears this was a terrible accident that did not involve criminal activity,’ New York’s Metropolitan Transport Authority said in a statement sent to CBS News.

The news comes only months after another commuter was killed in a similar incident on the subway in July.

The straphanger died after his pants got caught in the door of a subway train in Brooklyn, dragging him across the platform and onto the tracks.

The 37-year old unidentified man was exiting a northbound Q train at Brooklyn’s Avenue M stop at around 11.50pm on Wednesday when he was dragged across the platform by the moving train and then thrown onto the tracks, where another train was arriving.

Early in the year, two people were shoved onto the tracks, including Michelle Alyssa Go, who was killed after being pushed onto the Times Square station track by a homeless man.

A man who fell onto the tracks in rush hour during a fight in Queens was recently killed by a subway train, while another man was fatally stabbed while riding a train in Brooklyn.

After a series of violent deaths on the subway, governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday announced a plan to increase the presence of police officers in the transit system.

‘We’re all fighting for our city but there’s more work to do. That’s why we’re investing in mental health services, more officers in the subways, and more affordable housing,’ Adams said on Twitter on Sunday.
