Police set up separate crime scenes to examine the two stabbing incidents in the city’s centre and spent the morning scouring for evidence as detectives work to identify the offenders.

In the fatal incident, emergency services were called to Bourke Street about 5.45am following reports of an assault.

Two men were found with stab wounds and were rushed to hospital in a critical condition, where one of the victims, who is yet to be formally identified, later died.

The second man, aged in his 20s, remains in hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

No arrests over the homicide have been made at this stage but a man, 19, was taken into custody at the scene for affray and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Detectives taped off Bourke Street between Elizabeth Street and Queen Street on Sunday as they examined the scene.

Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Troy Papworth confirmed the man accused of the stabbing remained on the run.

‘(The alleged offender) came into the city, with the intent to cause this offence they then fled the scene, and our police are still looking for those things where any members of this group involved,’ he said.

Earlier on Sunday, two men were found injured about 300 metres away after a wild brawl broke out outside the Inflation nightclub.

Police have been told two groups of men appeared to argue as they were leaving a bar along Riverside Quay about 12.40am.

The argument allegedly spilled onto the promenade footpath, where three men were set upon by two other men.

A 25-year-old man from Springvale was struck heavily to the face before he fell and hit his head on the ground.

The two other men, aged 24 and 25-years from Keysborough and Cheltenham, received facial injuries.

The pair who police said appeared to be the aggressors fled the scene.
