Hollywood royalty Nicole Avant has backed Rick Caruso to be Los Angeles’ next mayor after her mother was killed in a home invasion – and crime and chaos continues to spiral in the city.
Avant, 54, served as President Obama’s US ambassador to the Bahamas and is married to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.
But she has thrown her weight behind the newly-defected Democrat billionaire real-estate mayor hopeful Caruso – after her mother Jacqueline Avant was shot dead in her home in an exclusive Beverly Hills enclave after a night out with husband, legendary music executive Clarence Avant.
Avant told Bari Weiss’ Substack, Common Sense, that she found it ‘very insulting’ when people told her she ought to vote for Karen Bass in the upcoming midterms just because she is also a black woman – despite her old boss Obama also endorsing the candidate.
Instead, Avant said that LA‘s rocketing crime problem demands a new mayor to fix the city’s problems.
‘This is like a breaking point. Who is in charge here? How is this happening?,’ she told Common Sense.
‘It’s the drug addicts in front of people’s houses, it’s people naked in the street—there’s so much chaos, and Rick is the opposite of that, and we just need to reel things in and do things in a different way.’

Avant said that she doesn’t ‘ever vote on race or gender.
‘I’m a free thinker. People told me not to support Barack Obama and to support Hillary Clinton for the same reason, because she’s a woman. You can’t win.’
Avant, who served as ambassador to the Bahamas from 2009 to 2011, is also a film producer whose work includes a 2019 Netflix documentary about her father, ‘The Black Godfather.’
Rick Caruso is a billionaire businessman – who has identified as a Republican, an Independent, and now a Democrat. He announced his candidacy for mayor on February 11 this year.
And Avant is not the only high-profile backer of Caruso. He has received a slew of endorsements, from Kim Kardashian to Gwyneth Paltrow, who believe he will be effective at solving LA’s plethora of problems.
The city’s progressive DA George Gascón has consistently been at the forefront of criticism for being lenient with sentencing criminals – as homicides in LA reached their highest level in 15 years in 2022.
He has faced recalls after consistently failing to pursue felony charges. He’s been vocal about his belief that the criminal justice system needs to focus more on intervention and rehabilitation, blasting ‘tough on crime’ policies as racist and a failure.
Jacqueline Avant was shot in the back when a robber, who was a repeat offender, broke into their $7million Beverly Hills home 11 months ago. Arariel Maynor has since been sentenced to a minimum of 150 years in prison, after it was revealed he bragged to friends over the phone about the from jail following his arrest.
In January, a UCLA graduate Brianna Kupfer was stabbed to death in a random attack in the middle of the afternoon while working in a luxury furniture store in the city.
Murders in the City of Angeles rose 52 percent last year from 2019, and shooting incidents were up 59 per cent, according to LAPD data.

In December 2021, shocking photos obtained by DailyMail.com showed the sliding glass door that was smashed in a home invasion resulting in the murder of the wife of legendary music executive Clarence Avant in their elite, ungated Los Angeles neighborhood.
Avant’s mother, Jacqueline Avant, died on December 1, 2021, of a gunshot wound in the brutal crime, but police pointedly declined to confirm that robbery was the suspected motive, saying all possibilities are under consideration.
Officers arriving at the scene discovered one victim, Jacqueline Avant, suffering from a gunshot wound. Clarence Avant, 91, was in the home at the time but was not injured.
Police said there were no suspects at the scene when they arrived.
Jacqueline was transported to a local hospital but died later that morning. She was 81 years old.
In a statement to DailyMail.com, the victim’s family said at the time: ‘The entire Avant and Sarandos families wish to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, support and heartfelt condolences for Jacqueline Avant.’

Residents have argued that homelessness is the top problem facing the county, with 94 per cent of voters viewing it as a serious or very serious problem
A new Redfin migration report shows that about 9,072 homebuyers in San Francisco are looking to move to either Sacramento, California, and Seattle.
In LA, about 6,720 homebuyer are looking for homes in San Diego and Las Vegas, and in New York City, 6,372 home shoppers hope to ditch the Big Apple for Miami.
The Dem-led cities, which have all seen a spike in violent crime this year, are leading the latest exodus as Redfin reports nearly 24 percent of homebuyers in the US are looking to leave big cities amid the cost of living crisis.
The report also shows that Sacramento enjoyed the most new residents moving in during the third fiscal quarter, gaining about 8,700 new homeowners.
Miami followed with a net inflow of 8,000 people, with Las Vegas coming in third with 7,000 new homeowners.
The latest report backs up the findings from the American Housing Survey, which found that Dem-led cities made up the majority of the top 15 metropolitans areas residents were moving away from.
Homeless encampments have spread into virtually every neighborhood of the City of Angels, while the number of homeless has climbed to an estimated 70,000 people.
Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, facing re-election this year, has budgeted record sums to combat homelessness that pervades all of the state’s major cities and many smaller communities as well.
The state is providing roughly $12 billion on homelessness programs over two years.
Still, the government’s inability to clear encampments from streets, parks and sidewalks has left voters angry and frustrated.
