New York Times mocked for naming John Fetterman among this year’s ‘most stylish’ people

The New York Times has been mocked for its decision to include John Fetterman in its list of ‘most stylish people’ for 2022 – with the Pennsylvania Democrat‘s own wife among those demanding a recount.

The newly elected Senator is hard to miss at 6 foot 8 inches, boasting a salt and pepper goatee, bald head, tattoos and hoodie – except when he’s forced to ditch his signature look on the Senate floor where men are required to wear a jacket and tie.

His wife, Giselle Barreto Fetterman, was among the first to raise the alarm when her Democratic husband was bestowed his newest accolade, posting her disbelief to Twitter.

‘No, not John Fetterman!! Recount!!,’ she wrote.

The list is described as the ‘high and low, fun and serious, curious and open minded’ list of characters with the most appreciation for the material world for 2022.

'No one can possibly believe Fetterman is actually stylish' said one twitter user, while another took a swipe at the outgoing Pennsylvania lieutenant governor calling his style that of a 'slob'

‘The ‘people’ on this list — who are presented in no particular order — include politicians and celebrities and athletes and influencers and fictional characters from TV and film,’ the Time writes.

‘Some of them appeared in the Styles section this year, others simply captured our attention.

‘Love them or hate them, [they] all have at least one thing in common, at some point over the past 12 months, they made us talk about how we dress, how we live and how we choose to express ourselves.

‘We welcome dissent. But we are, without a doubt, correct.’

Fetterman was described as the senator-elect from Pennsylvania who was ‘going to bring Carhartt to the Capitol’.

Carhartt, which was founded more than 130 years ago, is a brand beloved by folk artists, rappers, oil riggers, skaters and the fashion week crowd alike.

It is said to hold an ‘intangible allure’ by romanticizing the ‘humble, flinty American worker.’

‘Total liberal bias, @nytimes! I not only have the best hair in congress, but I brought @Carhartt to Capitol Hill four years ago,’ Republican Tim Burchett jokingly wrote on Twitter.

‘How does the @nytimes justify putting John Fetterman on the same list as the late Queen Elizabeth?’ Sheridan Nolen, a staffer for Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott wrote.

‘What is @nytimes smoking?’ Nachama Soloveichik, a DC political consultant, wrote.

Meanwhile others tore into Fetterman many aghast by the flagrant disregard for style.

‘No one can possibly believe Fetterman is actually stylish. He dresses like someone who hangs out around a vape shop or convenience store all day,’ wrote one Twitter user.

‘2022 is the year of the Goblin Mode. Dress up like a slob and make the NYT’s list of most stylish people,’ wrote another user.

The outgoing Pennsylvania lieutenant governor wasn’t the only politician to make the list, joining Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, with the paper citing her personal ornaments as standout accessories.

‘The newest Supreme Court justice has brought statement necklaces to the Marble Palace,’ the Times said.

Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams was described as the ‘Party Mayor’ who has the ‘it’ factor, according to the New York Times style desk.

‘Call it ‘swagger’ (as he has), call it style: Either way, there’s no denying the Party Mayor’s got it, along with a closet full of impeccably tailored suits,’ the paper wrote.

While Vice President Kamala Harris didn’t make the list, her stepdaughter Ella Emhoff did, with the paper playing up her ‘cartoonish personal style.’

‘Not even the orbit of the buttoned-up White House, where Ms. Emhoff’s stepmother works as vice president, could pull the knitwear designer and IMG model away from her cartoonish personal style,’ the Times wrote.

Meanwhile, some imports including Prime Minister Sanna Marin of Finland, who made headlines when a video of her dancing and partying with friends and celebrities was leaked, made the 93-person list, as well as the late Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Anne.

The list also included a star-studded cast of glitterati including Rihanna, Ben Affleck, Timothée Chalamet, Lil Nas X, Anne Hathaway and Brad Pitt.

Fetterman’s approachable style has had to take a back seat as he moves into Capitol Hill however, with the new Senator seen donning a suit and blue tie last month while in Washington for meetings.

Fetterman, along with newly-elected Democratic Senator Peter Welch, were in D.C. to meet with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after winning their contests.

Fetterman beat Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. Welch is replacing retiring Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy.

The newly-elected lawmakers won’t be formally sworn into office until January but were in the Capitol to learn the ropes of legislating.

Republicans, who had been favored to win, took control of the House with a 222 majority.

Meanwhile, Democrats retained control of the Senate after winning crucial contests in Arizona and Nevada.

The power position for Democrats allows the Senate to confirm President Joe Biden’s executive branch nominees and judges, including for the Supreme Court if there are any vacancies in the next two years.

Democrats will also be able to decide what bills to put on the Senate floor.

And senators can act as a block to any attempts by House Republicans to repeal President Biden’s signature laws, including the Inflation Reduction Act.
