New York teenager drowns the day before her 18th birthday on vacation in Florida when strong current pulled her and best friend out to sea – ‘other half’ who survived is ‘devastated’

A high school senior from New York drowned the day before her 18th birthday during a special mother-daughter trip to Florida when she got caught in a strong current and swept out to sea.

Danielle Marceline, 17, was swimming in the ocean near Cocoa Beach – located south of Cape Canaveral – on Saturday around 1pm in ‘rough surf’ when she was overcome by a strong current. 

Marceline was swimming with her best friend Mary Doyle at the time. Doyle, described as her ‘other half,’ survived the horrifying ordeal, but lifeguards could not reach Marceline and her body was discovered washed up on the beach the next day.

The young woman’s body was found by a couple walking along the beach, Daily Voice reported.

The grief-stricken Doyle went to Instagram days after the tragedy to share the profound loss of her best friend, as friends also shared messages of love and support.

‘Just wanted to say happy birthday to the most beautiful girl I know inside and out. Your literally the reason why I got where I am today. I love you so much Danielle you mean everything to me. I’m beyond speechless I jus wish I could have one more convo or jus even here you laugh one more time. But I love you always Danielle happy 18th bestie,’ she wrote with pictures of her best friend. 

Marceline was a student at Catholic Central School in Latham, New York. She was a star athlete who was a leader of the school’s volleyball and basketball team, as well as a talented dancer.

Her mother described her as ‘her everything’ and said she was excited about studying interior design after graduating high school. 

Lansingburgh Central School District Superintendent Antonio Abitabile issued the heartbreaking news on Monday.

‘It is with great sadness that I need to inform everyone that one of our Lansingburgh families has suffered a great loss over the weekend,’ her wrote, in part.

‘Danielle, her mother Chris and her friend Mary were vacationing in Florida to celebrate Danielle’s 18th birthday, which would have been yesterday. Danielle was a senior who transferred to Catholic High two years ago and was a student in Lansingburgh until 10th grade.’

‘In speaking to some of her teachers, she was an absolute pleasure to have in class, bringing smiles to those around her,’ he wrote, in part.

A GoFundMe was created by a friend close to the family to help with funeral costs. As of Thursday morning, more than $36,000 has been raised, surpassing their goal of $17,000
