‘Did he forget this isn’t rugby?’: New York Giants’ Scottish punter Jamie Gillan mocked by fans for DROPKICKING the ball by against the Eagles – and it even left the officials confused about what to do next!

New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan caused a moment of chaos when he dropped the ball before punting it in Sunday’s game against Philadelphia Eagles.

Gillan received the ball and went to punt far upfield when he appeared to drop it amid the wet and rainy conditions at the MetLife Stadium.

The ball bounced before he scuffed contact and as it landed, the players themselves appeared unclear on what followed next. So too were the officials.

They had to huddle together and confer before eventually awarding the ball to the Eagles for an illegal kick and a 10-yard penalty for the Giants.

Gillan’s kick was shaping up to sum the entire game up for the Giants – they trailed the Eagles 21-7 at the halftime interval.

Unsurprisingly, fans reacted ruthlessly to Gillan’s error. Gillan was born in Scotland and played rugby as a kid – a sport where players are allowed to dropkick the ball.

He only started playing football when he moved to the US age 16 and is nicknamed ‘the Scottish hammer’.

One fan responded to the clip on Twitter by saying: ‘Did he do this on purpose? I canā€™t tell if the ball slipped or he forgot this isnā€™t rugby.’

Another fan wrote: ‘Jamie Gillan just drops the ball before the punt… The wheels have completely come off at this point.’

The Giants had sympathy from a rival supporter, who wrote: ‘That #JamieGillan punt was the most painful thing I’ve ever watched happen in an NFL game and I’m a Colts fan…’

The Giants headed into Sunday’s game with a 7-4 record, sitting third in the NFC East standings.Ā
