‘What is my life?!!’ Ncuti Gatwa sends emotional thank you to fans after Doctor Who casting is revealed and says he’s celebrating by ‘frolicking with Ryan Gosling’ on Barbie movie set

Ncuti Gatwa told fans his ‘heart is very very full’ after an emotional Sunday which saw him announced as the next Time Lord in Doctor Who.

The actor, 29, took to Instagram on Monday morning to thank fans for the outpouring of support he has received since the big news was announced.

And after attending his first ever BAFTA TV Awards alongside returning Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies hours after the casting news, he quipped he was spending his Monday ‘frolicking with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.’

Posting on Instagram the morning after the BAFTAs, Ncuti told his 2.6million followers: ‘Yesterday was emotional. Thank you all for all the love. Means the entire universe… or Whoniverse rather.’

Later the actor shared a selfie from the back seat of a car as he revealed his exciting plans for the day.

‘After yesterday heart is very very full,’ he wrote alongside the photo of himself beaming for the camera.

‘Off to spend a day frolicking around with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. WHAT IS MY LIFE?!!’ he added.

Ncuti is currently shooting the hugely anticipated live-action Barbie movie alongside Margot and Ryan, who play Barbie and Ken, Ncuti’s role has not yet been revealed. 

Ncuti’s Sex Education co-stars Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells also appear in the star-studded ensemble cast.

Three weeks ago, the actor shared photographs of his and Emma’s names printed in pink on chairs as he teased his involvement by writing: ‘Come on Barbie, let’s go party…’. 

It was confirmed on Sunday that Ncuti will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord in the hit BBC series.

The 29-year-old will become the 14th Doctor on the popular sci-fi show, after Whittaker announced last July she will be leaving the role this autumn.

Gatwa is the first black actor to take on the leading role as The Doctor, after Jodie made history as the first permanent female Time Lord in 2017.

Jo Martin played the first black incarnation of the Time Lord in a January 2020 episode, Future of the Judoon, as Ruth Clayton, but Gatwa has become the first black Doctor to be cast as the series lead.

Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, rose to fame as Eric Effiong in Netflix‘s hugely popular Sex Education about socially awkward high school student Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his sex therapist mother Jean (Gillian Anderson).

Just hours after the announcement, Gatwa and Davies, who is returning as Doctor Who’s showrunner, grinned and posed for snaps at the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.

Gatwa showed off his sensational sense of style in a black suit with a plunging neckline and dramatic floor-length tassels, while he completed the look with a pair of sandals.
