A mother of four has faced backlash on TikTok after saying she would choose to save herself over her baby if there was ever a medical emergency while she was in labor.

Shelbie Martin, from Utah, who uses the handle @shelbielenora, sparked a fierce debate after explaining why she would put prioritize her own life in a now-viral video.

‘If during birth you have to choose to save me or the baby, save me. I have babies at home that need me,’ she wrote in the on-screen text.

‘[And] my husband agrees,’ Martin added in the caption.

The clip has been viewed more than two million times and has received nearly 2,000 comments since it was shared on January 11.

Martin was met with harsh criticism from other mothers who insisted that they would always put their babies first.

‘If you’re not willing to protect the baby inside of you, then the ones at home are better off without you. #SorryNotSorry,’ one person wrote.

‘Wow, you always save the baby,’ another responded. ‘They have their dad.’

‘I’m on my second and still say save my CHILD,’ someone else claimed. ‘Don’t say you’d take a bullet for them if you can’t put them first in ANY aspect.’

However, despite the judgment, there were also a number of mothers who fully agreed with Martin and thanked her for her honesty.

‘How is this even an unpopular opinion?’ one woman asked. ‘Always save the mother!’

‘I would have said save the baby 2 1/2 years ago… Now I’d say save me, cause my little girl needs me,’ another commented.

‘It’s always me. This is what they did in 2015. Saved me, not my baby. Beyond grateful I am still here,’ someone else shared.

Martin, who lost her own mother at age 18, told Newsweek that she filmed the video in response to another TikTok user who wants nurses to prioritize her baby’s life over hers in the delivery room.

‘I absolutely got backlash. I’ve been told I don’t deserve my children, my children are better off without me, and a few things harsher than that,’ she explained.

Martin noted that when she was pregnant with her first child, she would have chosen to save her baby, but her opinion has changed now that she has four children who depend on her.

‘I stand by what I said and I’m glad it’s put other mothers’ minds at ease when they thought they were being selfish,’ she shared.
