An Australian teacher is being applauded for the heart-warming gesture she made to her students for Christmas.

The primary school teacher, from Melbourne, asked her 22 pupils to draw their ‘dream monster’ and surprised them weeks later with a unique plush toy each designed off their artwork.

Michelle, mum to one of the lucky students, six-year-old Kit, told SBS News her son’s class was ‘blown away’ by their one-of-a-kind Christmas gift.

Kit drew a yellow, green and grey caterpillar with spikes down its back which he named DooDoo and, along with his classmates, was surprised when he received his special toy two months later.

‘Their monsters have come to life. It’s pretty incredible,’ she said adding the teacher made the toys at her own expense.

‘He said, ‘I love my monster and now I get to keep it to remember prep and [my teacher].’

She said Kit was ‘so, so excited’ and ‘pulling all of his excited faces he he gushed about his new toy to his mum.

She said Kit told her he loves his monster and the sweet gift showed him how much the teacher loves him.

Another of the student’s parents, Reid, delighted users on Twitter after sharing a series of images of the various toys the children received from their beloved teacher.

‘My kid’s teacher made toys for her class based on their drawings. Pay teachers more,’ he said in one of his tweets.

His tweets have gone viral with more than 130,000 ‘likes’ and told SBS his daughter has brought her new toy on holiday to show her extended family.

Reid said the teacher had done the same for her students in the past and said it was an example of why teachers should be paid more.

‘Apparently, during [the COVID-19] lockdown, she rode around the neighbourhood and dropped off the toys to each child’s house,’ he said.

‘Teachers are the people our children spend half of their waking hours with. They help to create the people those children are going to become. There are countless stories of people who credit inspirational teachers for their own success.’

SBS tried to contact the teacher who said she felt ‘very appreciated’ by the positive response on social media but wanted to remain anonymous.

Reid has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the generous teacher and encouraged people to donate to local schools in their area.

He did warn other Twitter accounts have impersonated him and started their own scam fundraisers so to be cautious and only donate to the link on his page @ReidParker_.
