Melbourne restaurant owner doubles down after staff refused to serve Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot because they were wearing their tennis gear: ‘We treat everyone the same’

A Melbourne restaurant owner has doubled down after Russell Crowe and his partner Britney Theriot were turned away because of their overly casual attire.

Kristian Klein, who owns Japanese-fusion restaurant Mr Miyagi on Chapel St, supported the decision of his staff, citing the couple’s ‘slobby gym gear’ for why they were refused service.

What accounts for ‘slobby gym gear’ obviously depends on opinion, as Crowe was actually wearing a Ralph Lauren polo shirt he’d bought earlier that day and Theriot was wearing her tennis skirt.

The pair has just played a game before stepping out for dinner.

‘We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Russell Crowe. We’ve got a dress code that we that we push across every level’ Mr Klein told The Herald Sun on Friday.

‘So whoever it is, it stays the same. We’re consistent with it and I don’t feel like it’s unreasonable.’

Mr Klein says the hip eatery routinely rejects anyone wearing beach attire and athleisure, including yoga pants, tank tops and flip flops.

‘We’re not trying to teach people how to dress. But I know personally if I’m in my thongs and my boardies, I’m not going to try and go to a nice restaurant, because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately’ he said.

The pair took to the court on Friday but found themselves barred when they attempted to enter Japanese-fusion restaurant Mr Miyagi for a post-game lunch.

Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg told Daily Mail Australia they were turned away while trying to grab ‘a quick bite to eat’.

‘He (Russell) went there wearing a brand new Ralph Lauren polo having just played a game of tennis and was turned away,’ Mr Vandenberg said.

Crowe and Theriot then went to another nearby restaurant for lunch.

Following the encounter, both he and the restaurant have been put in contact to smooth things over.

Mr Miyagi’s dress code states the establishment has a ‘smart casual dress code’ where work gear, active wear, singlets and thongs are not permitted.

Mr Miyagi owner Kristian Klein told The Sydney Morning Herald a staff member did not recognise Crowe on Friday and they would love to have him back.

Crowe and Theriot have been together since 2020 and have been pictured playing tennis together on more than one occasion.

The couple met on the film set for Broken City in 2013 and were confirmed as together after being captured being affectionate with one another on a tennis court in November, 2020.

Crowe was previously married to Danielle Spencer from 2003 to 2012, with whom he shares two sons, Charles and Tennyson.
