One of Australia’s all-time favourite racegoers – ‘Fairy Floss Girl’ – has fallen on hard times that threatened to put her behind bars.

Karly Tsivoglou set the internet alight when she was snapped by Daily Mail Australia casually scoffing fairy floss at Melbourne‘s Oaks Day Day in 2016.

The photos went viral across the country – with KIIS FM Kyle Sandilands gushing the then 19-year-old was ‘hotter’ than Selena Gomez.

On Wednesday, the now 24-year old appeared in the Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court after failing to comply with a good behaviour bond she received for a series of dishonesty matters.

Appearing alongside a Victorian Legal Aid lawyer, the court heard Tsivoglou had been charged with one count of handling stolen goods, five counts of obtaining property by deception and one charge of theft.

The incidents happened in March 2021, while Melburnians were in the grip of one of the longest Covid-19 lockdowns on the planet.

The court heard Tsivoglou made admissions to the crimes in January last year through the court’s diversion program.

Under Victorian law, diversion plans are often handed down to first-time offenders and are designed not to impact on a person’s life going forward.

Under the diversion plan, Tsivoglou was not required to formally plead to the charges and instead simply made admissions to the charged offences.

She was released on a 12-month bond on the provision she provided an apology to the court by January this year.

Tsivoglou was charged by police after failing to supply the court with that apology, which saw her hauled before the court again charged with breaching the order.

The breach meant Magistrate Steven Raleigh was forced to sentence Tsivoglou again over her initial crimes.

Her lawyer told Mr Raleigh Tsivoglou had fallen on tough times after her parents split up.

‘She’s had unstable housing arrangements since her parents split up … the letter went to a previous address where her partner lived,’ her lawyer said.

The court heard Tsivoglou claimed she simply did not receive the court correspondence in the mail and had promptly provided the letter of apology upon learning of the breach.

Magistrate Raleigh took just seconds to discharge her original diversion, allowing Tsivoglou to walk free without a blemish on her record.

‘You’ve been punished enough,’ he said.

Dressed in a long brown puffer coat, Tsivoglou said nothing as she made her way to a white BMW and drove away.

Tsivoglou previously told Daily Mail Australia she was ‘happy’ to appear in the news each Melbourne Cup.

‘I’m happy with that,’ she said.

Tsivoglou said she and her friend Alice Woodfall ‘had a few glasses of champagne, put a few bets on and just enjoyed the sun’ at the races and had no idea about her internet stardom until the next morning.

‘I woke up this morning with so many messages and screenshots of the photos! I was honestly shocked!’ she said at the time.

‘My social media accounts have been going crazy all morning!’

Tsivoglou said she’d received her share of compliments at the races but was shocked by the number of people ‘professing their love’ once her photos went viral.

‘A few people claimed they were in love with me,’ she said.

‘But both Alice and I were getting a lot of positive compliments throughout the day.’

From then on, Tsivoglou regularly shared photos of nights out and poolside holidays to her social media.

However, her online presence has taken a turn in the last few years with the new-mum focusing on her little boy.

Pictures show the mother-son duo enjoying arts and crafts, days at the beach and bath-time.

But Tsivoglou still does manage to get in the occasional glamorous snap.

Almost every year at Melbourne Cup time Sandilands brings up Tsivoglou’s memorable pictures.

‘She looks amazing, she’s got cotton candy hanging out of her mouth… it’s all happening,’ he said at the time.

‘She’s kinda like a Selena Gomez looking girl,’ Jackie O said.

‘But hotter,’ Kyle added.

The Sydney radio host brought up the ‘Fairy Floss Girl’ again in a November, 2020, segment about the Melbourne Cup’s most iconic moments.

‘God, I can’t remember,’ his co-host ‘Jackie O’ told him. ‘Why was that so memorable?’

Kyle defensively shot back: ‘Because she was a beautiful brown girl. She was just gorgeous. She was hoeing into that big fairy floss stick.’
