One punter decided to lose his shirt as he slid across the wet grass at the Melbourne racetrack – much to the amusement of the crowd who cheered him on and recorded the gaff on their phones.Â

High-spirited revellers kept the energy high after attending the biggest day on Australia’s racing calendar which saw the majority of women dress in bright hues of pink, orange and red as well as floral prints.
Star trainers of Gold Trip, Ciaron Maher and David Eustance, won back-to-back races after Detonator Jack took out Memory Of Her Majesty The Queen in race eight.
The win marked redemption for Zahra who was forced to sit back and watch his ride Verry Elleegant win the 2021 Melbourne Cup while he sat out after being suspended for breaches of Covid regulations.Â
‘This time last year I was watching Verry Elleegant win and getting told off for drinking too much. To come a full year and have redemption on a horse like this with good mates of mine.. it’s just an unbelievable feeling,’ he said.Â
Zahra’s elated wife Elyse joined him during his post-race interviews, shrieking in victory and proclaiming: ‘We’re not doing seconds anymore he said this week. No more seconds’.Â
Interpretation was the only horse who didn’t finished the race, however it’s understood the horse is okay.Â

One Melbourne Cup Day punter won an astonishing $155,000 from a $1 bet that yielded a 100 per cent dividend, while several wins from outsiders meant many more were left with hole in their pocket.Â
However, that didn’t stop revellers from kicking back with a drink or two in the Birdcage or placing bets with friends trackside as iconic race day celebrations continued. Â
In Melbourne, punters shivered through the coldest Melbourne Cup day since 1995 when temperatures hit a low of just 13.6C, with icy winds and rain pounding the city on-and-off throughout the day.Â
Attendees were seen holding umbrellas or protecting their expensive outfits with clear ponchos which were quickly abandoned after a brief period of sun in the afternoon saw a rainbow stretch across the track.Â

In both cities, police were on hand to ensure celebrations didn’t get too rowdy as racegoers started to leave racetracks to continue the fun at post-race celebrations.Â
Earlier in the day, race authorities were on high alert after a self-admitted ‘problem gambler’ broke into Flemington racecourse to pour an oily substance on the track.

Alarming footage showed at least two people running onto the famous track at about 6am on Tuesday to spray a dark liquid over the course in apparent protest against the Victoria Racing Club (VRC).Â
The substance has not officially been identified but was labelled ‘oily’ with one person turning themselves in.Â
The VRC confirmed officials had cleaned a section of the track at about the 1500 mark on the track on Tuesday morning and said it was safe for the race to continue.
A statement issued by the protester said they had been demonstrating against the building of a wall designed to keep floodwaters from the neighbouring Maribyrnong River from damaging the turf on the race-track.Â

Some local residents had been angered by the construction of the wall, saying it diverted water toward their homes and increased the likelihood of future floodwaters inundating their streets. Â
The day was not without drama, with climate change protesters using a van to block a main road outside the track while they stood on its roof and screamed at punters entering Flemington.Â
‘Eat your pheasant, drink your wine, your days are numbered, bourgeois swine,’ a protester was heard yelling.Â
Meanwhile, fans have praised Australian singer and heartthrob Cody Simpson – who attended Melbourne Cup with girlfriend and fellow swimmer Emma Mckeon – for his rendition of the National Anthem.Â
The 25-year-old was applauded by social media users who said it was one of ‘the best’ renditions in a long time. Â
