She said: ‘When we flew into Buckingham Palace, this is when they were really young, the royals. We had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, without the crust, which was a little bit posh for me.

‘So then I decided, ‘Can we go into the kitchen and just make some toast and jam?’ So we did that too.’

Mel previously cheekily confessed that  she didn’t wear knickers as she received her royal honours.

But while receiving the honour, cheeky Mel quipped that she was ‘stark, b****ck naked’ underneath her figure-hugging outfit.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: ‘Victoria asked me, “Will you wear nipple covers?” I said, “Why bother?”.

The singer also revealed that Prince William had begged her for a Spice Girls reunion.

She said: ‘And he asked, “Will you get the Spice Girls back together?”. I told him I was having dinner with Victoria that evening and he said, “Oh good, I’ll work on David then”.’

Mel added that her and Prince William had chatted about her work on domestic violence, with her calling it a ‘very special moment for me’.

Mel’s appearance comes after Prince Harry referenced a meeting with the Spice Girls in his memoir, Spare, which was released last week.

Prince Harry recalled his first public engagement since the death of his mother Princess Diana, where the Spice Girls performed at a benefit in Africa hosted by Nelson Mandela in November 1997.

In the book, he says: ‘The Spice Girls concert represented my first public appearance since the funeral and I knew, through intuition, through bits of overheard conversations, that the public’s curiosity about my welfare was running high,’ the Duke of Sussex, who was 12 at the time, continued.

‘I didn’t want to let them down, but I also wanted them to go away. I remember stepping onto the red carpet, screwing a smile onto my face, suddenly wishing I was in my bed at St. James’ Palace,’ he added.
