A parking ranger is fighting for his life in hospital after the young driver he was trying to give a ticket to allegedly ran him over. 

Matthew Valerio, 21, was allegedly behind the wheel of his white Mazda BT-50 ute on Saturday night when he got into a dispute with a Sydney ranger over sitting in a no parking zone on Marian St, Enmore in Sydney’s inner west.

Police allege Valerio was being issued the fine just before 8.50pm when he sped away from the ranger and ran down another parking ranger, who was on the street at the same time.

Paramedics treated the 61-year-old ranger for life-threatening injuries before rushing him to hospital. 

He remains at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police allege Valerio also hit two cars as he drove away from the scene.

Valerio attended Newtown Police Station two hours later and was arrested by officers just before 11pm.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous, not give particulars to injured person, and two counts of not give particulars to other driver.

Following police inquiries, a vehicle was seized from First Avenue in Five Dock to undergo mechanical and forensic examination.

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday where he was granted conditional bail.

The matter will return to court on December 16.
