A male babysitter has been accused of burning a two-year-old boy with cigarettes, breaking the bones in his back and leaving him on a ventilator with brain damage fighting for his life.

TyShawn Brumfield was taken to hospital after his babysitter Howard Youngblood claimed to have found him unresponsive, telling police that the child had fallen down the front steps of the house.

Doctors said later that the injuries were not consistent with a fall as the toddler had multiple bleeds in his head and swelling, arrests documents obtained by WKRG reveal.

Youngblood was arrested and taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Dec 16 on a second-degree cruelty to juvenile’s charge.

Family members said the child is now hooked up to a ventilator at the hospital and remains in a critical condition.

‘The [doctors] told me that it’s brain damage. TyShawn suffered what they call forced blunt trauma to the head,’ Shelia Parker, the young boy’s grandmother, told Fox 8 live.

‘Right now, even though we have all these other things with his bones in his back and stuff being broken and other things, the primary concern is that head injury.

Parker said she is ‘heartbroken’ at how something like this could happen to her precious grandson.

‘I’m hurt, I’m angry, I’m angry. And I know that in the process of time, everything will be cleared up and the individual responsible for this, the court system is designed to deal with him according to the process,’ said Parker.

Parker said the suspect was a friend of the child’s mother – who had absolutely no idea that he would do something like this to her child.

‘I want to be able to hold my grandson. You know what I’m saying, I want to put my arms around him, because every time they touch him, when the nurses and the doctors touch him, he jumps and his heart rate go so high, because he thinks something bad is happening to him,’ said Parker.

Parker said her grandson was a sweet young boy who was kind to all he met.

‘My baby had a beautiful smile and he loved to [play] ball, he loved to eat, he loved to run around, he’s just friendly. And he’s quite spirited, he wasn’t a bad child,’ said Parker.

Now Parker is just hoping he recovers, so she and his entire family can show him the true meaning of love.

‘I want to be able to hold him and let him know, I love you and there is love, you know. I want him to know that you are not never going to go through this pain here no more,’ she said.

‘He needs to know it’s going to get better, because that was very wrong, that was very wrong. And right now, my grandbaby needs love, after being beaten and tortured.’

Speaking to brproud.com, Parker expressed her anger toward the person who might have done this to her grandson.

‘They took all the joy out of him,’ said Parker. ‘Who bites on a baby? Who cuts their throat? Who burns a child? Who does this?’ she said.

Parker said TyShawn’s mom was staying at a friend’s house after her apartment got mold.

‘The baby kept getting sick. So, she left the apartment because she had no other choice and was living there with her friends. They should have fixed the house, not just wiped the walls down when the baby continues to get sick because theirs mold in it,’ she said.

Doctors have not confirmed what the next steps are for TyShawn, but, Parker said she will be fighting for justice.

‘I’m crying not just for my grandson but so many others who are helpless,’ said Parker.

The doting grandmother started a gofundme page in which she posted a picture of the young boy with a neck brace and strapped to medical devices.

The page hopes to raise $100,000 to cover the two-year-old’s medical costs and has so far raised $2,375.

In the description Parker writes: ‘TyShawn, a 22-month-old toddler, [was] man handled, beaten, and burned with cigarettes.’

‘He is fighting for his life at the Children’s Hospital here in Baton Rouge. My grandson did not deserve this.

‘Brain surgery, part of his skull removed, trauma to his face and body, broken bones in his little back.

‘He even has cigarette burns to his penis and testicles and between his toes. Lord Jesus help my grandchild.

The dismayed grandmother went on to add that the two-year-old was hooked up to a ventilator and is praying for his release.

‘TyShawn Brumfield you will live and not die! You will be blessed holistically in Jesus name!’

‘We can’t work but we need to sustain ourselves. While being here through his recovery.’

Police are still investigating the matter.
