A popular beach has been closed after a mysterious item that was believed to be an unexploded bomb washed up on shore.

Police evacuated Lighthouse Beach at Port Macquarie, in northern NSW, after receiving a call at 9am on Saturday.

An exclusion zone had been set up around the site and the army called in to help with the situation.

Authorities warned residents to stay away from the beach with the area to remain closed for the next few hours.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the area remained off limits until members of the Australian Defence Force could identify the object.

It was revealed hours later the object was in fact an old naval flare.

‘Initial inquires have indicated that it appears to have been in the water for many years,’ a NSW Police spokesperson said.

‘The item posses no risk and will be further examined by the ADF.

‘Members of the public are remined not to approach any suspicious objects they may locate and to immediately contact Triple Zero.’
