The planet Mars is officially in retrograde, and according to astrologers, it may turn the next few months into a rollercoaster ride, as ex friends and lovers might try to come back in your life, arguments may erupt more often and be more severe – and you may even notice a lack in your sex drive.

Roughly once every two years, for a three-month period, Mars goes into retrograde – which means that it appears to move backwards while the Earth passes it – and during that time, many people believe that the planet’s movements can make things in their life go amiss.

From struggling at work to facing problems in their relationships, people are convinced that Mars going into retrograde can spark a slew of misfortunes; and according to astrologers, the current Mars retrograde – which kicked off on October 30 and will not end until January 12 – is going to be even more intense than usual, so buckle up and prepare for a wild ride.

Astrologer Yasmin Boland has weighed in on the event exclusively to DailyMail.com, explaining that because it’s occurring during the Zodiac sign Gemini this time around – the sign of ‘communication’ – you might want to prepare for things to get a little crazy in the upcoming months.

‘Unfortunately, this particular retrograde is being characterized by three clashes between Mars and Neptune,’ she explained.

‘That can make for confusion and even disappointment when it comes to whatever it is you’re trying to achieve, men in general, and also any fighting.

‘We just need to expect a fair bit of confusion between now and the end of the retrograde in January.’

According to Instyle, Mars being in retrograde can even negatively impact your sex drive – with the outlet reporting that it can ‘dull motivation’ and make you may feel ‘less interested’ in things like working out, starting new projects at your job, and getting intimate with your partner.

The New York Post warned against starting any new romances during Mars retrograde, since they will quickly ‘lose steam’ and sexual attraction will ‘fade’ as time goes by; and according to the outlet, you can also expect ‘exes and enemies’ to come back in your life during this three-month period.

‘People from the past are likely to return to you during Mars retrograde – especially if there was an intense focus around sex, passion or war,’ the outlet claimed.

‘This could be a time to rekindle the rapport – or you may instead tear open the wounds once again.’

The Cut also reported that your ‘processing power’ may not be ‘as sharp’ as it normally is, which could result in ‘rumors, gossip, and lies’ to be mistaken as the truth – and could lead to you making ‘some regrettable choices.’

But does the planet’s motion really have such a large impact on our lives and what exactly is the science behind it? Why is this one worse than the others and how does your zodiac sign impact it? And most importantly – what can you do to help ease the effects? From how it works to why it happens, here’s what you need to know about Mars being in retrograde.

What exactly is Mars retrograde?

When Earth passes Mars, it creates an optical illusion that makes the planet look like it's reversing course and going in the opposite direction

When Earth passes Mars, it creates an optical illusion that makes the planet look like it’s reversing course and going in the opposite direction

Earth moves a lot quicker than Mars – our planet makes two laps around the sun in the same amount of time that it takes Mars to go around once – which means we lap the planet about every 26 months.

While all the planets in the solar system move in the same direction around the sun, when Earth passes Mars, it creates an optical illusion that makes the planet look like it’s reversing course and going in the opposite direction – something known as retrograde.

‘Mars appears to go backwards in the skies from our vantage point here on earth,’ Yasmin, who has her own book about the Sun, Moon and stars called Moonology Diary 2023, explained.

‘Of course the planet is not actually going backwards. It’s a bit like if you are going very fast on a train and outside there is a horse slower than the train. It can appear that the horse is going backwards, even though it’s not.’

How does it really impact us?

While the planet is not actually going backwards, we are moving past it during that time, and some astrologers believe that passing the planet can make waves here on Earth

While the planet is not actually going backwards, we are moving past it during that time, and some astrologers believe that passing the planet can make waves here on Earth – like a boat that leaves a wake in its path.

Mars was named after the Roman God of war, passion, ambition, and sexuality – so many are convinced that it has a strong affect on all of those things; in addition, it’s actually the planet that’s closest to Earth, so it’s believed that it has the heaviest impact on us.

Another astrologist, named Kyle Thomas, told DailyMail.com, ‘Because Mars is a personal planet and much closer to Earth, we will all feel its effects potently.’

According to StyleCaster, any time a planet goes into retrograde, it should be a period of ‘retreat and introspection,’ and it acts as an opportunity to ‘reflect’ on yourself and ‘face problems’ that you’ve been avoiding.

‘As a retrograde turns a planet’s energy inward, it forces us to retrace our steps, tie off loose ends and solve lingering problems,’ the outlet explained.

‘And as we allow this window of reflection and review to show us what needs fixing, it unfolds as an accelerated growth period.

‘In other words, retrogrades mean that life is about to get a little worse before it makes life a lot better.

‘After all, retrogrades force us to face the problems we’ve been avoiding so that we can finally put it behind us.’

Why is this Mars retrograde more severe?

Because Mars is going into retrograde during the zodiac sign Gemini, StyleCaster warned that you may notice an increase of 'controversy, intellectual spars, and rude arguments'

It’s believed that the time period during which Mars goes into retrograde can have an impact on how much it will affect you.

Because Mars is going into retrograde during the zodiac sign Gemini, which is the sign of ‘communication,’ Yasmine warned that ‘old arguments’ may come up and that you may find yourself ‘getting stuck on one particular issue or point and arguing about it non-stop.’

She explained, ‘Because Mars is the planet of anger and war, having Mars going backwards can mean that old arguments are going to come up.

‘On the world stage, it could be that old issues between nations could come up again as well.

‘The risk with this particular retrograde is getting stuck on one particular issue or point and arguing about it non-stop between now and the end of the retrograde in January.’

‘[But you can] use the focused energy to talk through an issue until it is finally sorted out,’ she added.

Astrologer Julia Kelley echoed these sentiments to DailyMail.com, explaining that ‘how you communicate with others and process emotions’ will be most heavily impacted during this retrograde.

‘This Mars Retrograde in Gemini will have a lot to do with the mind-body connection, and how we communicate with others and process emotions or regulate emotions within our own bodies,’ she said.

‘Since Mars is associated with action, momentum, and the body, Mars retrograde will bring attention to the physical areas of our lives.

‘That’s why slowing down and stepping into awareness during this time will be necessary.

‘Common occurrences during Mars retrograde can involve accidents, arguments, and miscommunication.

‘Mars is associated with anger, and while it is retrograde, there may be events that cause frustrations to arise.

‘Overall, this will be a time when you can expect to feel more sensitive to anything occurring within your body, and anything around you that is affecting your body.’

The Post also said people should expect 'delays, obstacles, and challenges' to 'pop up at every turn,' and that you may find yourself feeling 'extra triggered' and easily 'frustrated'

She added that because it’s taking place in Gemini, there is emphasis on ‘technology, transportation, and the systems we use for communication.’

Kyle also warned DailyMail.com that you may feel ‘drained’ or ‘depleted’ over the next few months.

‘Often, our energy feels drained and depleted [during Mars retrograde] and we will feel more challenges making progress,’ he said.

‘We experience karmic life lessons around sex, passion, and conflict and often have situations and people from the past return to us. This includes exes, enemies, and people we shared intense passion with.

‘It’s a time to slow down, find closure, and release situations that are no longer serving our higher good.

‘This specific Mars retrograde takes place in Gemini, so how we speak, connect, and communicate will be up for review.

‘We may find ourselves in a battle of ideas or seeing people who use words as a weapon meeting their downfall.’

The Post also said you should expect ‘delays, obstacles, and challenges’ to ‘pop up at every turn,’ and that you may find yourself feeling ‘extra triggered’ and easily ‘frustrated.’

‘This is not the ideal time to start anything new – it will inevitably fail. This means not making any major decisions, like starting a new job, opening the doors to a business or releasing a major project,’ it said.

‘The same is to be said for relationships – do not “go official,” get engaged or become married.’

StyleCaster reported that you may notice an increase of ‘controversy, intellectual spars, and rude arguments’ during the retrograde.

The outlet added that people should ‘remain mindful of what they say and how they say it while the retrograde is underway.’

But while you should expect a lot of ‘Hell-raising’ from those around you, StyleCaster added that this can be a great opportunity to let go of ‘meaningless resentment’ and ‘deepen’ your ‘confidence in yourself,’ as you ‘rethink the way you act on your impulses.’

The publication also claimed that people should expect ‘deepened intimacy’ and an ’emotional transformation’ during this time, along with ‘vulnerable conversations’ that could bring you ‘closer’ to your loved ones.

‘Let go of meaningless resentments, as you’re being taught how to dig deep and act on what you believe rather than what you fear,’ it added.

Yasmin also added that Mars going into retrograde can be a good thing, as long as you remind yourself to ‘slow down.’

She said: ‘Many of us are feeling very impatient to get completely back to normal after the pandemic, and to sort things out with anyone we fallen out with because we want everything to be as perfect as possible before the year ends, but Mars retrograde is here to remind us that everything happens at its own pace.

‘So rather than wishing this cycle away, as many people seem to do because they don’t really understand it, think about where in your life you need to slow down.

‘Maybe you need to be more patient. Maybe you need to be more patient with someone else.

‘One thing to do while Mars is retrograde between now and January is to take a look at what is going on in your life now and put all your energy into whatever needs your attention and determination.

‘Focus on what is and what needs work, rather than thinking about the next big thing.

‘Mars retrograde is a very good time to stop fighting. Go back over the old issues which have come up and sort them out rather than continuing to batter your adversary.’

What can you do to stop the effects of Mars retrograde?

Astrologers have recommended that you don't freak out when Mars retrograde hits, but rather, proceed with caution

Astrologers have recommended that you don’t freak out when Mars retrograde hits, but rather, proceed with caution

First and foremost, many astrologers have recommended that you don’t freak out when Mars retrograde hits, but rather, proceed with caution.

Yasmin explained that because the new year is going to start during the retrograde, people should be wary of making too many plans for 2023 until the retrograde ends.

‘2023 is going to dawn with Mars retrograde. That means that although it’s an extremely good time to set intentions and make resolutions, as usual, it’s probably not worth trying to forge ahead with your plans until the middle of January when Mars retrograde will be over,’ she said.

Julia added that people should use this time to ‘transform their health and habits.’

‘It may bring many emotions to the surface which can seem overwhelming at first, but it will also offer the chance to find tools and methods for emotional and somatic regulation in the body,’ she told DailyMail.com.

‘Gemini is associated with the lungs and the breath, and the breath is heavily associated with nervous system regulation.

‘Thus, if you’ve been wanting to try out breath work, meditation, or any other practice that helps to regulate the nervous system, this Mars Retrograde is a great time to do that.’

The Cut added that if you remember to ‘fact-check’ your information, you will easily survive Mars being in retrograde.

‘When Mars retrogrades through Gemini, the name of the game is fact-checking,’ the outlet explained.

‘Before jumping to conclusions, be wary of any information you’re receiving. Make sure you take time to really think about and reflect on what you learn, including dynamics that may not be as obvious.

‘Motives and strategy may seem hazy over the next few weeks, so give yourself plenty of time to analyze, process, and ask for second opinions.’

Mars retrograde ends on January 12, and the next one won’t take place until December 2024.
