A Sydney woman who ditched the corporate world to become a full-time astrologist now lets the moon govern her life instead of an alarm clock.
Katherine Gillies, 37, who is known as Moon Muse, has been practising astrology as a hobby for 15 years, but it’s only more recently that she has turned it into a professional career.
The astrologist admits she went from ‘not really’ believing in astrology to understanding the concept and how it can be used as a life tool.
Katherine now even schedules her week in accordance with its guidance, refusing to work on Mondays because it is ‘ruled by the moon’.
Katherine Gillies is a Sydney-based astrologist who left the corporate world behind to follow her passion for astrology. She now works as a full-time astrologist under the name Moon Muse, and lives her life by following her intuition and letting astrology guide her
Katherine now creates astrology content online, does readings, hosts events and has recently released a daily astrology podcast with LiSTNR
Katherine, who lives in Newcastle with her partner, admits she has had a ‘pretty winding’ experience in life as she didn’t know what she wanted to do after studying at Sydney University.
After spending time travelling, she worked in the fashion industry in New York with big names like Vogue before deciding to study graduate law and work in the corporate sector.
‘After the first semester of law I knew I wasn’t going to be a lawyer,’ Katherine said, however she went on to work with a national law firm for years.
When ‘corporate life kicked in’, she realised it was not for her and took a energy healing diploma on the side.
After working as a digital content manager, she decided to quit her 9 to 5 and become a full-time astrologist.
Katherine had been practicing astrology as a hobby for 15 years by the time she decided the corporate world wasn’t for her
Katherine had been part of the mystical world for years by that point, she would often read tarot for friends, and was sharing astrology content online.
‘No day looks the same,’ she said about her life as a full-time astrologist, adding that she lets her intuition guide her.
Her days include doing readings, creating content, recording her podcast and sometimes hosting events such as moon ceremonies.
As well as following her intuition, she lets astrology dictate her day to day life.
‘I don’t work on Mondays as they are ruled by the moon so I let the creative juices flow,’ she said, explaining that each day of the week is ruled by a different planet and therefore has a different energy.
‘I actually didn’t believe in [astrology] when I was young,’ the astrologist admitted.
She explained that learning about birth charts helped her understand the concept, after not ‘resonating’ with the typical horoscope.
Each person has a unique birth chart, which is based on the place, time and date of birth.
‘Your birth chart is screenshot of moment you were born, it shows the souls potential,’ she said.
The astrologer didn’t believe in astrology until she learned more about the concept and began to understand her birth chart
Katherine is an intuitive astrologist, meaning she helps people interpret their astrology and answer life questions using their own intuition. Since 2018 she has also practiced life coaching.
She believes that many people ‘dismiss’ astrology because they are only used to reading horoscopes, but she says it can be used as a ‘tool for self-discovery.’
‘Astrology is a beautiful tool to look at someone’s soul blue print or cosmic blue print,’ she said.
She is not trying to change sceptic’s minds but just offering her advice for people that are interested.
Her favourite part of the job is ‘helping people live out their potential,’ and step into their ‘dream reality.’
‘Everyone’s dream reality is different. It’s really about getting to know what peoples true reality is and what they desire,’ she said.
The astrologist said she doesn’t have a least favourite part of the job because she is living her dream.
‘It is financially viable, but it is a commitment, in order to be financially successful and have a viable business you have to show up everyday,’ she said.
‘In saying that a lot of opportunities seem to magically come my way,’ she added, explaining that she balances the line between going out to get what she wants and trusting the process.
Katherine’s new astrology podcast ‘It’s a Sign‘ with LiSTNR is a 90-second astrology snippet that runs Monday to Friday.
According to Katherine the podcast can ‘help people demystify astrology,’ she charts moon and planetary transits and explains to listeners how these changes translate to their day-to-day lives.
‘It offers a daily look into what’s happening in the skies and how we can take small practical steps to be more in alignment with the cosmic rhythm,’ she said.
‘By learning to align your week with the cosmos, you can step into a rhythm and flow which is otherwise untapped. Astrological information distilled and delivered via simple practical tips can have a profound effect on people’s lives.’
‘We teach people that there’s more to astrology than regular sun sign horoscopes and that they themselves are incredibly unique, just like their birth chart. With a shift in awareness [the listener] can take action towards living out their best, most aligned, life.’
