An elderly woman who was kicked and slashed open by a kangaroo is lucky to be alive after being saved by her brave dog, who fought off the roo for 45 minutes until help arrived.

Pam Baldwin, 71, was walking her Rottweiler named Bundy when she was attacked from behind by an aggressive kangaroo at Nail Can Hill in Albury, Western Australia.

She was kicked in the stomach and slashed across the arm by the vicious roo, who knocked Ms Baldwin to the ground and left her arm needing stitches.

When her loyal companion caught wind of his owner being in trouble, he launched into action, chasing the kangaroo away before the roo set its sights on him.

Ms Baldwin said the kangaroo then tried to drown Bundy in a nearby dam before both she and her dog were saved by paramedics after she managed to alert nearby walkers.

On Neil Mitchell’s 3AW radio show, Ms Baldwin said she had a feeling something was behind her before she was thrown to the ground.

‘I just got this feeling someone was behind me and I turned around and went “oh…” and he [the kangaroo] was just looking me in the face and next minute he went bang. I gave him a few choice words and then I hit the ground,’ Ms Baldwin said.

‘I don’t know if I blacked out or he knocked me out but I remember Bundy coming and jumping over the top of me and chasing the kangaroo away.

‘He was protecting me, he chased it away.

‘Bundy fought the kangaroo for about 45 minutes. He wouldn’t let the kangaroo come near me.’

Ms Baldwin was told Bundy was about 20 seconds from death when he was finally rescued, completely exhausted.

Horrified witnesses said the kangaroo was at least six feet, or 1.8m tall.

Ms Baldwin said the aggressive encounter may have been due to kangaroo mating season but it wasn’t the first time she had encountered a furious roo.

‘I had an encounter with another roo a couple of times last year and he used to hide in the grass and you’d be walking along and the bloody thing would jump up at you,’ she said.

Ms Baldwin admitted it was probably time to find another hill to walk her loyal companion on.
