The Inventing Anna star was first rumored to be in the running all the way back in August 2020, when Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary followed the actress on Instagram.

The hotly-anticipated project has been in the works for a number of years, and was hit with delays when Madonna, 63, parted ways with original screenwriter Diabo Cody.

British actress Pugh, 26, was another top contender for the lead role, and one industry insider even speculated that Pugh’s team had purposely announced her role in the Dune sequel in a bid to entice Madonna into offering it to her.

In March this year, insiders revealed details about the ‘grueling’ audition process as the search for the actress playing the Queen Of Pop went on for months.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, sources revealed auditions could sometimes involve 11 hour choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer, followed by a choreography session with the actual Material Girl singer.

During callbacks, actresses reportedly did readings and singing auditions with Madonna herself.

A source with knowledge of the try-outs called them ‘grueling.’ A source said: ‘You have to be able to do everything.’

Insiders say current drafts of the script culminate with her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, however this storyline may change as developments to the plot continue.

The film will require the actress to partake in singing and dancing sequences, and whoever ends up landing the coveted role will need to undergo a month’s worth of rigorous training in preparation for filming.

Universal is serving as the distributor for the film, which is currently in active development.

The studio has not yet given the movie a green light as typically that occurs once a final script, budget, and cast are determined.

‘A major factor is ultimately who will be cast’ as Madonna a source said.

Though if Garner accepts the role, that may speed things along.
