She wrote: ‘My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

‘I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred.’

Clarkson faced backlash after he said he despises the Duchess of Sussex ‘on a cellular level’ and felt ‘sorry’ for Prince Harry who is being ‘controlled’ by his wife.

In an apparent reference to the iconic Walk of Shame scene in Game of Thrones, Clarkson added that he wants to see ‘people throwing lumps of excrement at her’.

In a column for The Sun, Clarkson said: ‘I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.

‘At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, “Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her.

‘Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.’

However, amidst the outrage on social media at his comments, Carol Vorderman tweeted that ‘we absolutely do NOT think the same.’

She wrote: ‘NO Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it ok to write this stuff about any woman & absolutely NO to “everyone who’s my age thinks the same.”

‘No no no. We absolutely do NOT think the same. Listen to the noise Jeremy. The crowds are chanting “shame on YOU”.’

‘What an utter piece of trash he is…what is it with these type of men that triggers them so?’

Activist Dr Ayoade Alakija also claimed Mr Clarkson should be ‘arrested for incitement of violence against a woman’.

Journalist Courtney Pouchin also asked: ‘Is it any wonder Meghan Markle is scared?

‘It’s terrifying knowing there are men out there like Jeremy Clarkson who will openly admit to sitting up at night fantasising about violence against women – and think it’s perfectly acceptable. It’s not. And something needs to be done.’
