Make-up artist Keith Sayer defined Smart’s brows, applied lashes to her baby blues, and gave her a pink pout/cheeks.

‘Acting is what I love to do, and people keep offering me jobs, so it seems like it would be silly to say no,’ the Golden Globe winner told W Magazine in May.

‘I try to be choosy about what I do, and I know how incredibly fortunate I am to be able to be choosy; that is not a given for most actors. It’s been a really satisfying, fun, interesting way to make a living – and hopefully it hasn’t damaged my children too much.’

Jean portrays sensationalist British journalist Elinor St. John in Damien Chazelle’s 1920s Hollywood dramedy, which hits US theaters December 23 and UK theaters January 20.

‘Literally, there were just naked people around me everywhere,’ Smart said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! of the more debaucherous scenes.

‘Mostly my character just sort of… she’s a columnist just sort of sitting back and taking notes and observing. But just day after day, I finally just thought, “Jean, just don’t look down and don’t back up. You’ll be okay!”‘

Elinor St. John is based real-life writer Elinor Glyn, who coined the term ‘It girl’ in the early 1900s and turned Clara Bow into a movie star.
