Just over a month and a half after taking over DC Studios, James Gunn is already feeling the wrath from fans after cancelling Wonder Woman 3 and revealing Henry Cavill is not returning as Superman

The 56-year-old filmmaker and new head of DC Studios with Peter Safran took to both Twitter and Instagram on Monday to release a new statement about the ‘disrespectful outcry’ from fans.

While Gunn has yet to unveil DC’s new slate and reveal the fates of other films set for 2023, he did insist that his vision will not be affecting by the backlash from a vocal group of fans who still insist on having Zack Snyder return to ‘restore the Snyderverse’ despite Snyder himself saying he’s done with the superhero franchise.

‘One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least,’ Gunn began.

‘Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years,’ Gunn added.

‘Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind,’ he insisted.

‘No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions,’ he said.

‘We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us,’ Gunn said.

‘But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC,’ Gunn concluded.

Gunn also took to Twitter to address a few untrue rumors on the thread, including how DC will be recasting all of its heroes.

‘I keep seeing posts with this untrue theory. We’re not recasting everyone except The Suicide Squad,’ Gunn said.

He also responded to another fan who said he’d be happy if Gunn canceled all the DC movies and replaced them with sequels to his 2006 film Slither, with the exception of a possible Weasel film, though Gunn said, ‘This rumor is also untrue.’

Gunn and Safran were rumored to have presented their pitch for at least the next five years of the DC Extended Universe to WarnerMedia CEO David Zaslav last week.

There has been no indication on how the pitch was received, and what projects may be put into development first under this new regime.

Gunn did tease on Twitter last week that they will be sharing the first details of their slate early in the new year

Gunn had also revealed that he is currently writing the script for the new Superman film and it will not be an origin story, though it’s unclear who will direct at the moment.

He added that Cavill won’t be playing Superman because the story is focused on an earlier part of Superman’s life, adding that Superman is, ‘a huge priority, if not the biggest priority’ of his slate.

It’s still unclear what Warner Bros. plans to do with upcoming DC films such as Shazam: Fury of the Gods (March 17, 2023), The Flash (June 16, 2023), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 25, 2023), which represent the last films under the previous DC Films regime lead by Walter Hamada before the company was rebranded as DC Studios under Gunn and Safran, who officially took over on November 1.
