Hannah Barry has lifted the lid on toxic tactics used by fitness influencers and admits she used to feed misinformation to fans too

A fitness influencer has revealed her industry’s most toxic secrets and claims everything from targeted fat loss to ab workouts are ‘bulls**t’.

Hannah Barry, who admits to using the tactics to trick her own followers for years, is now exposing them in an attempt to clean up the industry.

The health coach, who works out of the UK, took aim at everything from clean eating  to supplements and one-on-one coaching in her epic TikTok takedown.

‘I used to be a really toxic fitness influencer,’ she admitted.

‘Now I am just not so toxic but wanted to tell you about some of the bulls**t that goes on within the industry.’

One-on-one-coaching

The personalised coaching you are paying for online is probably being carried out by your favourite coaches ‘shadows’ she revealed.

‘You are not actually even being coached by the people you are being coached by,’ she said.

Targeting certain areas

‘You can not spot reduce fat,’ she said.

This includes stomach fat or arm fat.

She says the only way to reduce these areas is to remain in a calorie deficit until you lose the weight in the desired places.

This will happen in order according to your own genetics.

She said workouts that target belly fat are useless because you can't burn fat from specific areas

Ab workouts

She says these are posted ‘purely for engagement’ and admitted to never actually doing any of the ones she promoted online.

‘They just go millions of views,’ she admitted.

‘Ab workouts don’t build abs whatsoever.’

Instead telling her followers to do heavy squats, dead lifts and heavy compounds instead.

‘Your body fat percentage will determine how visible your abs are and this comes down to what you eat.’

Viral workouts in general

The next viral workout she hit back at is the treadmill workout which recommends specific inclines and pace to reach your weight and physique goals.

‘Also bull,’ she said.

She admitted to sharing her own 'bulls**t' workouts - because they were more likely to go viral

Not taking rest days is also dangerous – but has become popular with viral ‘discipline’ based approaches to fitness.

Supplements

Hormone balancing smoothies, cleanses and detox are all useless according to the trainer.

‘You have a liver because your liver detoxes your body for you,’ she said.

While she believes protein supplements are good, she warns they aren’t magic.

‘If you start taking protein supplements but you aren’t eating enough overall you aren’t going to get the results you want,’ she said.

Food

Clean eating is a myth and sugar doesn’t make you fat, according to the young woman.

‘The only people who don’t need to be eating gluten are the people who are intolerant to it,’ she said.

She also warned there are a lot of people with eating disorders in the fitness influencer community.

She said clean eating tricks your brain into thinking fast food is ‘bad’. She says it is important not to categorise foods into good and bad.

What does work?

‘The only thing that actually causes fat loss is being in a calorie deficit,’ she said.

‘So whether you decide to stop eating past 6pm, which is pretty f***ing miserable, cut out gluten, stop eating white bread your body doesn’t care.’

She added that it is ridiculous to assume someone’s health is based on their appearance.

Hannah also revealed she would be asked by top influencers for the rights to her own transformation photos.

She said the women would offer her money for her pictures which show her overweight, underweight, and with a strong physique.

‘They wanted to sell them as if I had done their workout program,’ she said.
