Hunter Biden accused ex-wife Kathleen of threat to leak embarrassing pics to get divorce settlement

Hunter Biden accused his ex-wife of blackmailing him to sign a divorce settlement by threatening to leak embarrassing photos of him to the media.

The allegation was made in a letter from Hunter’s divorce lawyer to his ex-wife Kathleen’s lawyer in March 2017.

The letter, obtained by DailyMail.com from Hunter’s abandoned laptop, also accused Hunter’s ex, Kathleen Buhle, of expecting Joe Biden to financially ‘backstop’ their divorce settlement.

The news comes as Buhle’s memoir is set to be released next Tuesday.

Revelations in Buhle’s book, If We Break, include how she kicked Hunter out of their home after finding a crack pipe in their ashtray in the summer of 2015, and claims she learned of his affair with his brother’s widow in a family therapy session with her kids in November 2016.

Hunter claimed in emails that he learned of a 'blackmail' plot by Buhle in March 2017 amid their fraught divorce negotiations. He had his lawyer raise the claims to them in writing. People Magazine reported that Buhle told them she ‘does not receive alimony from Hunter’. But emails on Hunter’s laptop show their divorce settlement included an obligation for him to pay his ex $37,000 per month in perpetuity – and that Buhle had her lawyers write angry letters when he allegedly missed payments in 2019.

‘Hunter has learned that Kathleen intends…to release purportedly compromising photos of Hunter to the media,’ Hunter’s lawyer Sarah Mancinelli wrote on March 19 2017.

‘The threat to release compromising photos is entirely unacceptable, and likely actionable under the District of Columbia’s blackmail statute.’

Buhle’s attorney, Rebekah Sullivan, responded that her client ‘has no intention of doing so’ – but Hunter was still suspicious.

‘So implicit in this response is that she has picture but at the moment does not intend to release them. It does not address the fact that the threat was made which is a felony in and of itself,’ he wrote to his lawyers after seeing the response.

The letter from Hunter’s lawyer also accused Buhle of relying on Joe Biden to financially back his son to get her alimony – and even spoke to the former Vice President about it.

‘Hunter has learned that Kathleen’s settlement posture is premised on her expectation that Hunter’s father will backstop any financial arrangement eventually reached between the parties,’ Mancinelli wrote. ‘Indeed, Kathleen’s expectation has even been communicated to Hunter’s father.

‘Simply put, there is no ‘blank-check.’ Any settlement must be economically feasible.

‘If Kathleen is assuming that Hunter’s father will perform Hunter’s obligations, she is woefully misinformed and that mindset will hamper our ability to bring this case to closure.’

A letter from Kathleen's lawyer to Hunter's in 2019 shows that the couple's divorce settlement included an agreement for Hunter to pay Buhle at least $37,000 per month. 'The MSA [Marital Settlement Agreement] provides that, beginning 04/01/2017, and continuing thereafter RHB shall pay to KBB $37,000 per month as Base Spousal Support,' Sullivan wrote to Mancinelli

The lawyer also warned that a Washington Post writer was working on a story about them, and asked Buhle to promise not to speak to her.

A friend of Buhle who has known her and Hunter for decades told DailyMail.com the claims of blackmail were ‘patently untrue’.

The friend, who asked not to be named, said the president’s son made the claims ‘because he was a f***ing crackhead.’

‘[Hunter was] literally a f***ing crackhead. A drug addict, an alcoholic, a depraved, sick, pathetic, sad individual going through the worst moment of his personal life,’ the source said.

‘He was in a bitter, acrimonious divorce proceeding with his wife and he was saying and doing anything he could to try to weasel his way out of his obligations with respect to settling that divorce.’

A letter from her lawyer to Hunter’s a week later shows that the couple’s divorce settlement included an agreement for Hunter to pay Buhle at least $37,000 per month.

‘The MSA [Marital Settlement Agreement] provides that, beginning 04/01/2017, and continuing thereafter RHB shall pay to KBB $37,000 per month as Base Spousal Support,’ Sullivan wrote to Mancinelli.

Sullivan claimed that Hunter had failed to make the payments, hand over financial information or ‘failed to reasonably cooperate’ with Buhle when the IRS slapped a lien for Hunter’s unpaid taxes on an Indiana lake house property she got in the divorce.

The letter says that their divorce agreement also provides for extra payments to Buhle if Hunter earned over $875,000 in a given year.
