Hugh Jackman revealed he once auditioned to be Sandra Bullock’s FBI partner-turned-love interest Eric Matthews in Donald Petrie’s 2000 undercover rom-com Miss Congeniality, but her Demolition Man co-star Benjamin Bratt got the part.

The Australian 54-year-old – who’s only an Oscar away from EGOT status – told the tale in his new Variety cover story: ‘No one knew X-Men yet. I was a nobody.’

At the time, Hugh didn’t even want to play Eric, but his agent ‘made him’ in order to have leverage with negotiations for his role in Tony Goldwyn’s 2001 rom-com Someone Like You opposite Ashley Judd.

‘That’s humiliating, when your agent says, “I don’t want you to get this job, but just go get it.” And then you don’t get it,’ Jackman confessed.

People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2008 said Miss Congeniality was the first time he had ever tested with another actor during an audition.

‘I was impressed that she was in there. I didn’t expect her to be in there. I’m guessing eight people she tested with,’ Hugh recalled.

‘[I was thinking] “Holy s***! She’s amazing! And so quick and fast. I’m not even vaguely up to speed here.” I was pedaling as fast as I could, but I didn’t know the script well enough.’

Jackman and the 58-year-old Oscar winner still have never worked together aside from getting slimed while presenting a blimp trophy at the 2009 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

The character of Eric didn’t even last through John Pasquin’s Las Vegas-set 2005 sequel Armed and Fabulous since FBI Agent Gracie Hart (Sandra) got a new partner played by Regina King.

The Miss Congeniality films managed to amass a combined $314.1M at the box office despite increasingly horrible reviews.

But don't expect a three-quel as Bullock (pictured March 31) told Metro on April 6: 'God no, no. No...Unless they make a prequel with a young Gracie Hart. I think Gracie Hart is in her 10, 11-year-old life, still acting very much the same as Gracie Hart as an adult'

The 6ft2in triple-threat currently stars in Jerry Zaks’s Broadway revival of The Music Man, which runs through January 1 at the Winter Garden Theatre in Manhattan.

Hugh also plays divorced father Peter Miller in Florian Zeller’s dismally-reviewed family drama The Son – hitting US theaters November 25 – which is a prequel to 2020 drama The Father starring Anthony Hopkins.
