Brits across the country are nursing sore heads this morning after seeing out 2022 with a bang last night.

Revellers from Edinburgh to London braved wet and windy conditions to ring in 2023 in the first fully free New Year’s Eve celebrations since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Women were pictured covering their heads with handbags and blazers as they ran from bar to bar amid the rain in Leeds, Newcastle, Cardiff, Nottingham and elsewhere.

Some were later seen being given piggybacks by their friends after dancing the night away in their high heels.

Hundreds of thousands of revellers attended New Year’s Eve events across the country last night, as many returned for the first time in three years following Covid restrictions.

Hordes of people flocked to central London to watch the capital’s fireworks, with viewing areas designated along the Victoria Embankment, Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square and elsewhere.

Thousands of young people then headed out to fill the city’s pubs and clubs to raise a toast or two to 2023.

After being forced to close under last year’s lockdown restrictions, many bars and clubs in Leeds, Newcastle, Cardiff and Nottingham also looked jam packed.

Thousands of people also attended Edinburgh’s traditional Hogmanay celebrations as they returned for the first time in three years.
