Hannah Betts’s Better…not younger: Yes, you really CAN master screen goddess glamour

[ad_1]

Every bus stop and billboard right now seems to bear an image of actress Lily James embodying full-on screen-siren glamour as the star of Charlotte Tilbury’s latest campaign.

The shoot celebrates the Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter (£38, charlottetilbury.com) which was launched last Thursday.

Well might team Tilbury reference Hollywood’s Golden Age. Looking resplendent before a light-studded mirror and clad in a goddess gown, Lily, 33, looks as gilded as an Oscar.

Currently, I can barely drag myself up in the morning, let alone morph into looking like a screen legend. Still, I want in. After all, this punishing time of year is also awards season. Our film stars have to cope with the Golden Globes tomorrow, the Baftas in February and the Oscars in early March. It’s not easy being an icon.

Hannah Betts’s Better…not younger: Yes, you really CAN master screen goddess glamour

Tilbury’s new highlighter, as worn here by actress Lily James, is the apotheosis of the rose-gold gleam that the make-up guru is famed for

Lily’s look includes strong brows, neutral eyes and a glowing, coral-pink lip, while her Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation (£36) is as impeccably applied as ever. However, it’s her radiantly sculpted cheeks that spell true star quality: Tilbury’s new highlighter is the apotheosis of the rose-gold gleam that the make-up guru is famed for.

Available in seven shades, from Moonlit Glow to Bronze Glow, it combines the potent pigment of a pressed powder with the supple, satiny texture of a liquid shimmer. The result is an almost creamy metallic sheen designed to highlight and sculpt skin ‘so that everyone can get the facial architecture of the stars’.

To Hollywood ourselves up still further, on her website, Charlotte offers cheek, jaw, eye, nose, brow and lip techniques to cheat your way to a screen-goddess guise.

Matte addicts beware, this is a stupendously reflective look for day. Still, I adore it. It looks fresh and fabulously youthful, and also photographs beautifully. By night, La Tilbury encourages acolytes to dampen their brushes for serious disco-dolly kapow.

Obviously, Lily boasts a full face of Tilbury trickery. However, the two products I would focus on are the brand’s Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer (£25) and the new Airbrush Brightening Flawless Finish (£36).

The former is a lovely, luminous, bouncy bit of under-eye genius that comes in 30 shades and can be reapplied without ever sinking into creases or making you look jaded. Billed as ‘shapewear for the eyes’, it is sweatproof, humidity-proof, and waterproof.

The latter, a face powder, blends, blurs and brightens, while letting through natural shine.

Lily’s lips, meanwhile, have a glistening richness. Not only does this scream star quality, it will also fill out wrinkles on an older pout. Tilbury is not the only brand that excels in this department. I’m still raving about Chantecaille’s Black Jaguar Collection Lip Chic (£38, chantecaille.co.uk).

Infused with highly nourishing hyaluronic acid, this lipstick is plumping and glossy yet colour-rich. It comes in Passiflora, a pinkish toffee a la Lily in starlet mode, and Orchid, a vixenishly voluptuous berry.

I also recommend Deck Of Scarlet Threeway Solid Lip Oil (£25, deckofscarlet.com) for bombshell brilliance. Again, the 25 shades come packed with hyaluronic acid, and are powerfully pigmented and super-shiny. Vitamin-rich watermelon and cucumber seed oils will smooth January’s chapped lips and help diminish signs of ageing, too.

Thanks to the mirror-like pearl pigments, one stroke of Deck Of Scarlet’s oils creates a boldly coloured, glassy effect. I applied my Mauve Minx shade in public last week, and the strangers either side of me demanded to know what it was. It’s that great.

One final thing about Oscar-ready razzle-dazzle: a proper hairstyle will be the frame for all this make-up mastery, making your artfully sculpted bone structure stand out and everything else look that bit more astonishing.

And remember: you don’t need a full face of slap to sport highlighter. A friend who wears no make-up challenged me to do one thing that could make her look more alive. I took Trish McEvoy’s Fast-Track Highlighter Stick (£31, libertylondon.com) and finger-patted on a small ‘C’ from the outer corner of each eye down over her cheekbone to midway under her eye. She was ecstatic.

Experiment with Maybelline FaceStudio Master Chrome Extreme in Diamond Glow (£8.99, superdrug.com), if you remain unconvinced. Overnight Cream (£32.95, boots.com) and its Instant Cooling Mist (£14.95).

COSMETIC CRAVING

When beauty enthusiasts fell in love with hyaluronic acid as a facial hydrator, bright sparks started applying it to their hair, too.

However, waxes and oils are also required for this wonder ingredient to coat the hair cortex, otherwise it pulls water from the environment, creating frizz. L’Oreal Elvive’s bestseller, Hydra Hyaluronic Moisture Plump Serum (£12.99, boots.com) cracks this — and at a super-competitive price. It’s often on special offer, too.

With a few nourishing spritzes, it feeds brittle, dehydrated locks, plumping and smoothing the cuticle, and instilling immediate volume, shape and bounce. It is suitable for all textures, and can be used on wet or dry hair, and pre-styling, post-styling or instead of styling. Get some.
