Wicked in Oz! Blockbuster musical based on The Wizard of Oz to play in Sydney for the first time ever in 2023
The Grammy Award-winning Broadway musical Wicked is headed to Sydney in 2023.
The lavish stage production, partly based on the iconic 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, will be performed in Sydney for the first time next year.
NSW Minister for the Arts and Tourism Ben Franklin said it was a big win for the Harbour City as the production is set to generate millions of dollars in earnings.

‘Securing blockbuster musicals is key to our vision for the NSW visitor economy. This production will generate millions and support jobs in our arts,’ he said in a media release.
He said it will also lead to significant work opportunities for the Sydney arts community.Â
Producer John Frost echoed his sentiments and said Sydneysiders will love seeing the extravagant musical as it has something for everyone.

Lucy, a veteran musical theatre star, addressed the media at the Wicked Launch event
‘It appeals to everyone from 8 to 80. People love it for so many different reasons – some come for the engrossing story, some for the soaring ballads and some for the deeper messages,’ he said.
Wicked is based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, and tells the story of the witches who gave life to L. Frank Baum’s books and the Judy Garland movie.
The story is a re-telling of The Wizard of Oz, told from the perspective of the Witches in the Land of Oz.

The Broadway show is the fifth-longest-running production of all time, still running after its debut in 2003, and it was just became the third Broadway production ever to gross over $1 billion.
The musical sensation has been performed in 16 different countries – including the UK, Japan and New Zealand.
Wicked first came to Australia in 2008, where it ran in Melbourne for seven consecutive years.
