A single mother-of-two has lost custody of her children after ‘snapping’ and hitting her son with spoon when he blew $600 from her credit card on video games.

The 46-year-old Gold Coast woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assault in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The court heard the boy, who lives with autism and ADHD, used his unemployed mother’s card to buy video games in March, 7News reports.

After learning of the purchase, the mother confiscated the gaming console, and grabbed a spoon from the kitchen before hitting him on the bottom, causing bruising.

The boy subsequently kicked several holes in the wall and child protective services were later notified about the incident.

The woman admitted hitting her son during an interview with authorities and both her children were removed from her care.

Magistrate Mark Bamberry handed her a nine-month probation order, with no conviction recorded.

The woman’s lawyer had argued she had experienced a ‘brain snap with a difficult child’ and she was ‘extremely remorseful’.

Magistrate Bamberry sympathised with the woman’s situation, but said society had ‘moved on’ from physically punishing children.

‘I accept this completely out of character,’ he said during sentencing.

‘I can understand why she’s done what she’s done.

‘I can only imagine how difficult this is as a single mother with two children to make ends meet.’

The woman is allowed to see her children twice a week while supervised.
