New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was benched again on Thursday night for the second time in his last three starts as the Jets lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 19-3.
Wilson performed absolutely abysmally for the Jets, throwing 9-18 for 92 yards and an interception before being benched for fourth string QB Chris Streveler, who was promoted from the practice squad hours before game time.
Fans on social media who had to suffer through Wilson’s puttered performance wasted no time labeling the game as the death of the second year QB’s career in New York.
Zach Wilson was once again benched by the Jets during the third quarter on Thursday
Wilson performed abysmally throughout the game recording for only 90 yards and a turnoverÂ
Due to his inability to throw the ball the Jets also could not get the run game going either
‘We just watched the end of Zach Wilson’s career in New York,’ said one fan.
‘I think the ZachWilson era is over âĤ gotta produce,’ said another. A different, yet equally frustrated, fan said: ‘Zach Wilson is really bad at quarterback, huh.’
And Wilson admitted after the game that he understood why the fans were so annoyed.
‘I just felt like I didn’t have any rhythm out there,’ the 23-year-old said. ‘I was just trying to find some confidence out there on the field and I was trying to find something to get us going, a little spark, but I didn’t get anything there man.
‘I had opportunities. We’re going to go back and watch it. Right now, the feeling is I’ve got to get my head down and get better.’
Jets head coach Robert Saleh, meanwhile, told reporters the reason they switched to Streveler, ‘was more to get the run game going.’Â
Jets fans called for the end of Wilson’s career as the starting quarterback in New York
The calls of Wilson’s demise were not limited to the fans who called for him to be sat as the Jets offense and booed louder and louder at the MetLife. They also came from media members watching on.Â
‘This is not even part of the bit anymore. I genuinely think they need to put in Chris Streveler now,’ said The Athletics’ Zack Rosenblatt.
Rosenblatt also at one point before the benching said: ‘This is not even part of the bit anymore. I genuinely think they need to put in Chris Streveler now.’
‘I’d be pretty surprised if Saleh doesn’t make a change at QB coming out of the half,’ said Connor Rogers of SNY.
Media members watching and covering the game also called for Wilson’s head during the game
NFL Thursday Night Football crew member, Andrew Whitworth, center, said following the game that he doesn’t see how the Jets can go back to playing Wilson this yearÂ
The post-game crew from Thursday night football’s broadcast also seemed to stick a fork in Wilson’s chances of starting again any time soon, after Hall of fame tight end Tony Gonzales asked if it was time to ‘give up’ on Wilson.
‘You look at it, I mean how do you go back from here,’ said former all-pro Andrew Whitworth.Â
‘A couple of weeks ago you pull him, you can justify Mike White. You pull him today for a guy you brought up from [the] practice squad. I don’t know how you go back from that at this moment.’

Strevler (left) and Mike White (R) have both performed better than Wilson in relief of him
As mentioned, Wilson was originally benched after struggled tremendously against the New England Patriots when he only accumulated 77 yards in the entire game.  Â
Along with the atrocious performance against New England, Wilson has struggled to be productive through the seven other games he has started this season, often leaving the team’s outstanding defense to carry the load in games.
Wilson also failed to take even the slightest amount of responsibility in the aftermath of the offense’s stinker against the Patriots, which reportedly rubbed several of his teammates the wrong way and contributed heavily to his benching.
Although though Wilson has won five of the eight games that he started this season, he has averaged only 287 yards and 21 points per game not counting Thursday’s abomination of a performance.
Mike White on the other hand has only gone 1-2 in the three games he has started but the offense has averaged much more productive 420 yards and albeit 22 points per game.

Along with getting the passing game going Streveler also lead the team in rushing yards
After switching to Streveler the Jets offense seemed to come alive for the first time all night as he lead the team in rushing and finished with just two yards less than Wilson.
Even Jets great Darrelle Revis took to Twitter to comment on Wilsons’ demise by saying Zach Wilson has lost the trust of the Jet fanbase.Â
‘I’m not saying it’s impossible. it will be very hard to regain their trust again. I witnessed these same boos when Brett Farve was under center.’
One thing is for certain if the fans and media members have their way Wilson will be shipped out of New York on the next jet available – much like Farve once was after his temporary retirement put an end to his time in New York.Â
