Alone Australia has been billed as the most authentic reality series to ever grace the small screen.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, SBS head of unscripted Joseph Maxwell said there were no producers and that contestants all filmed themselves with direction.

‘Once people are cast – it’s up to them what they shoot, what they say, what they do,’ he said.

‘There’s no producing, there’s no directing. This is the most raw, unfiltered, authentic show you can have.’

Over 10,000 people applied for the series, which is already a blockbuster hit in the States, where it airs on the History channel.

Some of the contestants barely lasted a day, while others remained outdoors for months.

SBS recently unveiled the show’s official cast ahead of the March 29 premiere.

The cast includes a diverse batch of contestants, including an army veteran, an adventurist, and a wildlife biologist.

High school teacher and grandmother Beck, 42, who is First Nations, believes that her love of the land will help her win the series.

‘I’m resourceful, I’m a problem solver, I’m bloody stubborn, but I’m not a survival expert,’ she said in a statement.

‘I’ve grown up camping and fishing and been out on country, I’ve learned from my elders and friends who are great outdoors people… though I’ve never been away from my partner; I’m ready to test myself!’

Farmer and veterinarian Michael, 43, hopes that his Christian faith will pull him through.

Farmhand and engineering student Jimmy is the youngest of the crew at just 22.

‘I’ve spent most of my life being outdoors and learning what I can from nature and seeing how far I can go just on my own without having to rely on others,’ he said.

‘Ever since I saw the very first episode of the first US Alone series, I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do!’

The rest of the cast features army veteran Chris, 39, bushcraft teacher and ‘barefoot nomad’ Gina, 52, wildlife biologist Kate, 41, solo adventurist Mike 45, environmental officer Duan, 35, hunting guide Peter, 31, and planning & environmental manager Rob, 41.

Alone Australia follows a cast of individual self-reliance experts as they brave the elements and fight to stay alive on their own terms, with nothing but what they carry in on their backs.

The players’ mission is ‘to live alone in the wild, for as long as they can, documenting their journey every step of the way.’

There are no camera crews or field producers, with players instead filming themselves through the use of tripods and GoPro cameras.

‘Alone is the most successful factual franchise in the history of SBS On Demand,’ SBS said in a statement.

‘Alone Australia will see 10 Australians dropped in remote wilderness, where they’ll be challenged by the merciless forces of nature and hunger as they compete for a life-changing prize,’ they continued.

‘Their mission: to live alone in the wild, for as long as they can, documenting their journey every step of the way. Alone Australia is coming soon to SBS and On Demand.’

SBS already airs the original American version of Alone, which is broadcast on the History channel in the US.

The Down Under edition was filmed in Tasmania with a cash prize of $250,000.

‘There’s nothing like the Tasmania environment,’ SBS recently said in a statement.

‘It’s cold, it’s wet. There lots of flora and fauna, that is so unique to Australia, it doesn’t necessarily look like other international versions of Alone.’

SBS is so confident in the format that they’ve already opened casting for season two, despite the fact that season one has yet to air.
