‘It’s like walking out on the family’: Emmerdale’s Sally Dexter speaks out on her ‘devastating’ exit from the soap and teases new drama in the Dales for Al Chapman and Cain Dingle

She departed Emmerdale earlier this month after five years on the soap as Faith Dingle.

And Sally Dexter has now revealed that leaving feels like she has ‘walked out on family’, after her on-screen character tragically took her own life amid a battle with cancer.

Despite the harrowing departure, the actress, 62, has hinted at more drama on the horizon for her on-screen family – teasing for Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) to ‘watch out for Cain Dingle’.

Sally’s character Faith tragically took her own life in the scenes that aired earlier this month, passing away in the arms of son Cain, played by Jeff Hordley.

And opening up about the emotional exit, the actress told The Mirror: ‘It was like walking out on the family. It was like dying and leaving your family, but I know where they live!’

Chatting to the publication at the Inside Soap Awards, she explained that while sad, it was an ‘honour’ to act out the scenes.

‘It’s just been an honour to do it. I have had so many people who have had parents or family or friends in that situation, and it’s meant something to them. It really matters, it’s a life and death situation,’ she explained.

After discovering her terminal disease had spread to her brain, Faith, determined not to lose her faculties, took a number of pills before slipping away in the emotional final scenes. 

Fans were left in tears at the death, with one taking to Twitter to share that their heart was ‘broken’ over it.

The distressing scenes aired the same evening as the soap bagged the Serial Drama gong at the National Television Awards beating rivals Coronation Street and Eastenders.

Taking to Twitter one fan said: ‘Sally Dexter broke my heart tonight, what a show what an actress.

Another agreed writing: ‘Sobbing, that was truly sublime from everyone involved. Faith Dingle I shall miss you’.

And while it’s an emotional goodbye for Faith, the drama keeps on running in Yorkshire dales, as Sally teased even more on-screen blows on the horizon.
