Emmerdale viewers were left in tears on Friday as Marlon Dingle made an emotional plea to best friend Paddy Kirk after stopping him from killing himself.

The much loved vet, played by Dominic Brunt, has been struggling with his mental health in the wake of his wife’s Chas’ affair and after going missing last week, he prepared to take his own life in recent scenes.

And after reading his suicide note, Marlon (Mark Charnock) and Chas (Lucy Pargeter) went on the hunt for him, eventually finding him near a woodland as Paddy sat with a bolt gun in his hand.

Breaking down in tears, a desperate Marlon begged Paddy to reconsider, telling him to think of his daughter Eve, before saying: ‘If you do this, you’ll kill me too’.

The emotional scenes had a big effect on viewers at home, with one remarking that the moment had got them ‘right in the feels’.

Speaking to Paddy after finding him, Marlon apologised for not realising Paddy was so down, adding that as his best friend, it was ‘his job’ to know, adding that he’ll ‘always have time’ for him.

He added that the thought of Paddy not being in his life was unbearable and told his pal that he has ‘no idea how many people love you.’

Marlon went on to tell Paddy to think about how he felt when his own father took his life, telling him to think of how his own daughter Eve would feel having to bury her father.

The previous episode saw Paddy sharing special moments with his friends and family, especially young daughter Eve, and left suicide notes for them all.

In heartbreaking scenes, Paddy’s father Bear finds his suicide note and reads it allowed to Chas and Paddy’s best friend Marlon Dingle – with the letter then sparking a manhunt among the villagers.

Paddy began having suicidal thoughts after a build up of isolation, grief and confusion, and it will led to him saying his goodbyes to pals as his deep depression intensified.

Actor Dominic said of the storyline: ‘It’s a huge honour and a great responsibility to be portraying this storyline.

‘It’s an inherent problem in today’s society that most men don’t talk enough about their problems. We bottle them up, we don’t want to bother anyone, we become embarrassed, we feel we should be strong and not show weakness.

‘If this story can shine a light on the issue or make even a small change to someone’s outlook or viewpoint, then it will have been worth it.

‘It’s also a privilege to be working alongside The Samaritans and Andy’s Man Club in highlighting this issue.’

Meanwhile, the soap star revealed he had to ‘shake off’ the affect of filming the hard-hitting episodes, after working with charities The Samaritans and Andy’s Man Club to research the role.

Speaking to MailOnline and other media ahead of the episodes, Dominic explained he learned about the storyline well in advance from producers, as they planned to plant little hints at Paddy’s deteriorating mental health.

He said: ‘The mechanics of how it was going to work and who was being involved and the scale of it, and it kind of transcends the normal storylines that were normally given.

‘I think the only time I’ve had something like this before was when when Aaron came out, and it mattered to people.

‘I remember an uncle that was kind of that you know that generational kind of bigotry that’s there and he watched it and went yeah, I understand that.’

‘I was hoping that this story might do that that it might actually make a difference and normalize talking.’

He continued: ‘Whether it’s been through Andy’s Man Club, or doing my own research and it’s been incredible. And not only is it been inspirational, but it’s been pitch black, dark, and it’s made me appreciate what I have, which I feel I have.

‘Mental fortitude and, and my life kind of sails along here, you know. Then I’ll kind of look after myself if I’m busy, I’ll cut out alcohol and caffeine and I’ll walk the dogs and I’ll make sure I get plenty of sleep.

‘But speaking to people, where life has hit them so hard from left field, they’re nobody’s asked for this. It’s been really shocking and as I said before everyone that’s come through the other side of it has always said I’m glad I spoke to someone. I’m glad I talked. Talking saved me.’

‘And yeah, it’s been it’s blown the top of my head off. It’s really been incredible, really.’

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: ‘As soon as we started discussing this story we knew that it was vital for us to get it right and that we needed to open up the conversation about male depression and suicide.

‘Paddy is usually very happy-go-lucky in life, always joking and having a laugh, but what we see is that recent events have really taken their toll.

‘Despite him being popular and having lots of friends and family around him, Paddy starts to feel increasingly lonely, isolated and overwhelmed by his feelings and this leads to him having some very dark thoughts.

‘We’ve worked really closely with Samaritans and Andy’s Man Club every step of the way through this story and their incredible support and insight has helped us to shape Paddy’s journey into a true reflection of what thousands of men sadly go through every year.’

Emmerdale airs 7.30PM weeknights on ITV1.
