  • The alleged victim, 28, had to have his eye surgically removed due to his injury
  • Mirrabooka police charged two Ballajura men, 19 and 20, over the bizarre attack
  • It’s alleged the pair drove past the victim in a car and fired a potato gun at him

A scooter rider has had his eye surgically removed after it was hit by a flying potato, with two men now charged over the strange attack.

The alleged victim, 28, was riding a rental scooter along West Coast Drive in Perth with a friend on May 20.

When the pair neared Mettams Pool, a group of men in a passing vehicle allegedly fired potatoes at them using a potato gun.

One of the men suffered facial injuries and a fractured arm after he was hit. The injury was so severe that he had to have his eye surgically removed.

Two Ballajura men, 19 and 20, were charged over the alleged incident following an extensive investigation by Mirrabooka detectives.

Midland District Inspector Brett Baddock said police allege the attack was planned but not targeted at any particular individual.

‘It would appear those involved thought it would be fun to use potatoes as projectiles aimed at people minding their own business and enjoying our coastal strip,’ he said.

‘This so-called fun has ended in tragedy, with the victim losing one eye.’

‘Mirrabooka Detectives pursued this investigation relentlessly and there are very serious consequences associated with the charges that have resulted from this investigation.’

He added that detectives would not stop until ‘they have found all those responsible’.

Police used CCTV footage, mobile phone data and number plates to hunt down the two young men allegedly responsible.

The pair were charged with grievous bodily harm, committing an act likely to endanger the life, health or safety or any person.

One of the men was also charged with possessing a weapon, while the other was additionally charged with three counts of assault.

Both men will face Perth Magistrates Court over the attack on Friday.
