Katherine spoke about her injury publicly for the first time on podcast Three Little Words.

Crediting a physiotherapist she had at the time, she said: ‘If I hadn’t found him, I would have had an operation. I had a conversation with one professional about a wheelchair.’

Katherine, who was studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, said: ‘I couldn’t predict when it would hit. It was almost like I was lying, as one day I was in pain and the next I wasn’t. I knew I’d have to leave drama school.

‘To be in that pain every single day and not be able to walk… It was nerve damage. What made it worse was it had gone untreated for 18 months.’

‘The base of my spine had twisted to compensate because I’d been taking so many painkillers.’

She revealed physio with Kevin Ludlow changed her life: ‘He believed in rehab exercises. Long-term, he said I’d have to do yoga or pilates and he was right. I haven’t had any problems for 10 years now.’

She said: ‘You’re asked a lot when you’re a slim actress – especially back when I was in Corrie – ‘What’s your diet? What’s your secret?’

‘I used to really stay away from those questions because the truth was I’d come to exercise because it was going to keep me well.’
