Coronation Street serial killer Stephen Reid left Carla Connor for dead during Friday’s episode.

Underworld boss Carla (Alison King) was seen lashing out at Stephen (Todd Boyce) in another drug-fuelled outburst, with a temporary exit for the character airing at the end of the instalment of the ITV soap.

Villain Stephen has been slowly drugging his boss in a bid to take over underwear factory Underworld, but after she undermined him yet again, he got his revenge by spiking her tea.

As a dishevelled Carla decided she may need to go back on her antipsychotic medication, she headed up to her room to take a nap, while a sinister Stephen let himself in.

Slipping into the kitchen unnoticed, a sly Stephen turned on the grill in the hope of causing a massive explosion.

As huge flames raged from the open oven downstairs, smoke started to surround Carla while she slept upstairs.

Roy Cropper (David Neilson) was seen choking as he made his way through the property in a bid to stop the inferno.

Carla was totally unaware of he life-threatening chaos around as she slept having taken prescribed diazepam to help with her perceived mental health troubles, believing she was suffering psychosis again after a previous breakdown while unaware she was being drugged by Stephen.

However, Stephen had been drugging her for weeks and on this occasion entered her home after taking her keys from the factory.

Luckily Roy had been asked by Carla’s parter Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) to check on her.

Roy rushed to wake Carla and she insisted she hadn’t even used the oven before going to sleep.

The incident left her making plans to check in to a mental health facility in a bid to get herself better from any illness she may have been suffering from.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street will be rocked by a shocking death next week, leaving Evelyn Plummer devastated.

Will Roy and Evelyn manage to rebuild their friendship?

In the upcoming episodes, Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) calls in the café with Cerberus where Roy (David Neilson) apologises for missing her birthday party and tells her about Carla’s recent problems.

When Cerberus later shows no interest in his tea, Evelyn is concerned.

As his condition fails to improve, a concerned Tyrone (Alan Halsall) insists Evelyn take him to the vets.

When the vet suggests food poisoning, a guilty Roy reveals he dropped an eccles cake in the café and fears Cerberus may have eaten it.

Both angry and worried, Evelyn tells Roy that if anything happens to Cerberus, she’ll never forgive him.

The vet then breaks the news to Evelyn that Cerberus is suffering from kidney failure.

Evelyn is devastated as she says goodbye to her beloved pet after having him at her side for years.

Devastated at her loss, Evelyn furiously declares that Roy’s cafe is a death trap.

Roy tells Nina he’s getting rid of his phone, as had he not been distracted, he would never have dropped the cake and Cerberus may still be alive.

Will Evelyn and Roy manage to patch things up?

Speaking about the upcoming episodes, actress Maureen said: ‘It’s really sad. I had to say goodbye to my real dog on Zoom so it wasn’t much of a stretch to imagine this.

‘I really liked Cerberus, Boss is his name and he’s a lovely dog, seriously sweet natured and an incredibly beautiful hound. Gorgeous. It was as if he had an inkling that he was being written out! He was a bit subdued for a couple of days. He was valiant and that made it even sadder.’

Asked whether Evelyn and Roy can move forward, she added: ‘Look, she goes and pays money for a cup of tea she could make at home in Roy’s, quite frequently so she does want to spend time with him.

‘Roy understands about grieving. He gets where she’s coming from, doesn’t take much to bring her round because she knows where her bread’s best buttered. She feels sorry for him and sends him to Coventry for a while.

‘Evelyn is a great believer in bottling up and not whinging , nobody gives her much sympathy. She gets on with it like she would.

‘When you lose a dog it’s like losing a husband or a partner, all the routines have to change and nobody wants a miserable bugger so she feels she has to learn to not think about it too much and get on with her life.’

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
