Despite Max protesting that he did not order Blake to commit any violent acts, he was charged with incitement to commit murder for his racist propaganda videos.
Shock: Coronation Street took a dramatic turn on Thursday night as Max Turner was charged with incitement to commit murder after Blake stabbed Alya
His arrest comes after Blake (Adam Little) had revealed it was Max’s (Paddy Bever) racist videos that inspired him to carry out the horrifying attack.
Blake had attended an event to highlight Weatherfield’s refugee drop-in centre armed with a knife as he planned to attack event organiser Maria Connor.
But Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) jumped in the way after seeing Blake charging at Maria and was stabbed before the teenager was wrestled to the ground.
And in the aftermath of the attack, which saw Alya suffer a punctured lung, Max tried to run away after hearing Blake blame him, before being arrested and charged himself in connection with the attack.
Stabbing: His arrest comes after Blake (Adam Little) revealed it was teenager Max’s (Paddy Bever) racist videos that inspired him to carry out the horrifying attack
Max was first seen carrying multiple bags as he tried to run away from home in the early hours of the morning, before his adoptive father David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and Gail stopped him to ask where he was going.
To which Max replied: ‘I can’t stop here, everyone thinks I was part of what Blake did.’
‘What if he says something to the police? When they were dragging him off, he made out like I told him to do it,’ he added.
But David insisted: ‘Put your bag down, we can sort this out together.’
David then asked for help from his half-sister Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien), mother Gail Platt (Helen Worth) and lawyer Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson).
Fears: The teenager was left terrified when he was arrested by DS Swain and hauled in for police questioning after the shocking racially motivated stabbing at Speed Daal
As the group all gathered at David’s house, Max showed them the racist propaganda videos Griff persuaded him to make but insisted he had nothing to do with the stabbing.
However, Adam admitted that he could be charged with inciting violent because of the videos he created, for which he could face up to 10 years in prison.
In shocking scenes, Max was then handcuffed and arrested for incitement to commit murder as David and a tearful Gail watched on.
In police questioning, Max continued to insist that he did not ‘inspire’ Blake to commit the violent act and said he had ‘saved lives’ by earlier warning people about the bomb.
Fleeing: Max was first seen walking down the stairs carrying multiple bags as he appeared to be trying to run off, before his adoptive father David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) stopped him
After becoming influenced by Griff, he learned that he had planted a bomb in Speed Daal’s van and told residents, with Alya saving dozens of lives by driving the van away from the street.
Referring to the incident in police questioning, Max said: ‘I had no idea what Blake was planning, I’m not racist. I expressed my opinions on my videos but I didn’t want anyone to get hurt.
‘I warned people about the bomb, I saved lives. How is this anything to do with me?’
DS Swain (Vicky Myers) hit back with: ‘Blake is saying your videos influenced his actions.’
But Max fumed: ‘That’s ridiculous!’
Criticism: It comes after Corrie fans slammed its latest racism storyline as too ‘shocking’ to air before the watershed as Blake stabbed Alya in Wednesday’s scenes
Max then tried to explain how he became influenced by Griff Reynolds (Michael Condron), saying he was ‘lonely’ after his mother Kylie Platt (Paula Lane) was killed.
He tearfully said: ‘I’ve never had a hand-out, or a leg-up, or extra help or whatever. Despite the fact that I’ve got ADHD and can’t get back into school.
‘Despite the fact that my mum was stabbed to death outside my house. You learn to fend for yourself, you know, it’s lonely.
‘And then, someone comes along and tells you, you’re not mad, you’re not worthless, you’re not alone.’
However, the episode came to a dramatic end as Max was charged with incitement to commit murder as the scared teenager looked to David for help.
As well as Max facing the consequences of his connections with Griff, Alya was also seen recovering in hospital after Blake’s horrific attack.
The episode opened with Alya waking up following her life-saving operation after she suffered a punctured lung in the shocking stabbing.
Attack: Blake arrived at an event a highlight Weatherfield’s refugee drop-in centre armed with a knife as he planned to attack event organiser Maria Connor
She was visited by Maria, who shared her gratitude for Alya saving her life, saying: ‘I’m so, so sorry, I can never repay you for what you did.’
Alya later became tearful as she recovered in the hospital, saying: ‘I don’t know what’s come over to me, I keep thinking what would have happened if Gary and Daryan hadn’t have been there, if they’d reacted a second later.’
Alya was later discharged from hospital and was greeted by Sarah on her doorstep, who tried to persuade her that her nephew Max had nothing to do with the stabbing.
‘Max genuinely had nothing to do with what happened to Alya,’ Sarah insisted.
However, Alya apologised and said she needed to go into the warm and lie down, with a dejected Sarah leaving.
Elsewhere, Carla Barlow (Alison King) tried to fire Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) from his job at Underworld for lying to a client and pretending to be a ‘top consultant’.
Racism: In Wednesday’s tense scenes, Blake was fuelled by hatred and decided to go to an event at Speed Daal, live-streaming his intent to disrupt the event
But Stephen claimed his estranged wife Gabrielle (Helene Maksoud) had buried him in ‘red tape’ and stopped him from accessing his money, and he agreed to help out with stitching at the company, managing to keep his job and avoid firing.
Stephen is soon set for a dramatic exit from the soap opera as his life of crime begins to catch up with him.
It comes after Corrie fans slammed its latest racism storyline as too ‘shocking’ to air before the watershed as Blake stabbed Alya in Wednesday’s scenes.
Troubled teenager Blake arrived at an event to highlight Weatherfield’s refugee drop-in centre armed with a knife as he planned to attack event organiser Maria Connor.
But Alya Nazir jumped in the way after seeing Blake charging at Maria brandishing a knife and was stabbed before the teenager was wrestled to the ground.
Event: Blake continued to film Maria (pictured) addressing the crowds at the event, addressing Griff’s terror attack, which saw him plant a bomb in Speed Daal’s van
Alya was rushed to hospital and Blake then revealed it was teenager Max Turner’s racist propaganda videos that inspired him to carry out the attack.
However, Corrie viewers were quick to take to Twitter to comment on the tense storyline, describing it as ‘shocking’ content for before the 9pm watershed on ITV.
One fan wrote: ‘Omg I think the way this storyline is being told is downright offensive.’
While another said: ‘Wow what’s happened to #coronationstreet disgusting airing this!’
A third tweeted: ‘Thank God that’s over, it’s getting worse,’ while a fourth added: ‘I’m disgusted at what you have shown on coronation street tonight before the watershed.’
‘You can literally hear my eyes rolling because of how ridiculous it is,’ a fifth penned.

Drama: Other viewers shared their sympathy for Alya as she has been involved in a lot of drama on the show, saving residents’ lives by driving a van into a canal after a bomb was planted in it
Meanwhile, other viewers shared their sympathy for Alya as she has been involved in a lot of drama on the show in recent weeks, saving residents’ lives by driving Speed Daal’s van into a canal after a bomb was planted in it.
One person said: ‘That’s TWICE poor Alya has been hurt in the process of protecting people.’
Another wrote: ‘F**king hell Alya. They’re really using her as a punchbag these past few weeks!’
While a third gushed: ‘No one praises Alya enough. She’s literally the most selfless person on that street. Took the van with a bomb in to save everyone, then jumped in, and took the stab meant for Maria.’
Shock: After getting his phone back from David, Max tuned back into the live stream and saw Blake reveal a knife and immediately ran to Speed Daal to warn the guests
Previously speaking of the storyline, producer Iain Macleod said: ‘We are exploring a very 21st Century problem: teenagers self-radicalising through watching extreme content online.
‘In the end, we wanted this to be a story about communication within families – what are the right and wrong ways to talk to younger family members who are gravitating towards extreme views?’
In Wednesday’s tense scenes, Blake was fuelled by hatred and decided to go to an event at Speed Daal, which was organised by local councillor Maria to highlight the Weatherfield refugee drop.
In a live stream, he revealed his intent to disrupt the event, saying: ‘It’s time to fight back, it’s time for somebody to do something that makes people sit up and notice.’
Anger: However, Gary Windass (Mikey North) stopped Max from entering the event, grabbing him by the jumper and saying that people didn’t ‘want him here’
Attack: Blake then pulled a knife out of his pocket with Daryan Zahawi (Twana Omer) shouting words of warning as the teenager ran at Maria brandishing the weapon
Max was seen smiling as he listened to Blake’s racist comments, before his adoptive father David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) snatched his phone away from him.
David then asked Max to attend the drop-in centre, saying that he believes it will do Max ‘good’ to hear other people’s points of view, but the teenager describes it as a ‘waste of time’.
Blake then talked his way into Speed Daal and continued to live stream from inside the drop-in event, saying: ‘You better watch this, because I’m going to be all over the news tomorrow, and you’re going to see it live right now.’
Blake continued to film Maria addressing the crowds at the event, addressing Griff’s terror attack, which saw him plant a bomb in Speed Daal’s van.
Wrestling: But Alya jumped in the way and was stabbed, with Gary and Daryan then wrestling Blake to the floor as he brandished the knife
After getting his phone back from David, Max tuned back into the live stream and saw Blake reveal a knife and immediately ran to Speed Daal to warn the guests.
However, Gary Windass (Mikey North) stopped Max from entering the event, grabbing him by the jumper and saying that people didn’t ‘want him here’.
Blake then pulled a knife out of his pocket with Daryan Zahawi (Twana Omer) shouting words of warning as the teenager ran at Maria brandishing the weapon.
Noticing what the teenager was doing, Alya bravely jumped directly in front of Blake and he stabbed her in the stomach.
As horrified guests fled out on to the street, Gary and Daryan wrestled Blake to the floor as he brandished the knife.
Blake was then escorted out of the drop-in centre in handcuffs when he told Max that he was his ‘inspiration’ for the attack.
Alya was then rushed to hospital for a life-saving operation, with doctors revealing she had punctured a lung in the attack.
It is the latest twist in a hard-hitting storyline which saw Max groomed and radicalised by older figures as he became more estranged from his own family.
The lonely and vulnerable teenager was targeted by a gang of extremists, ultimately putting his own life and that of his friends and family in danger.
When Max first came in contact with Griff, he was made to feel very isolated and was eventually asked to join the gang alongside his girlfriend Lauren.
Lauren’s extremist ideology also influenced him to become worse in his racist ways, with Alya even approaching Max with her concerns about his girlfriend’s views, but he defended her actions.
In one episode, Max also watched an alarming propaganda film which further encouraged him to go against Muslims.
Motive: Blake was then escorted out of the drop-in centre in handcuffs when he told Max that he was his ‘inspiration’ for the attack
After becoming more isolated, Max quickly fell under Griff’s spell, who then used the teenager’s computer skills to spread his group’s racist propaganda.
But after Max learned that Griff had planted a bomb in Speed Daal’s van, he told the residents and Alya managed to save dozens of lives by driving the van away from the street.
However, Coronation Street fans were left in shock with the tense storyline, which has been quite extreme in comparison to the usual soap dramas.
Some viewers slammed the ‘disgusting’ racism storyline, with Ofcom receiving 139 complaints about his radicalisation.
Arrest: In upcoming episodes later this week, Max is set to be arrested and will have to explain his involvement with the radicalised group to the police
More Ofcom complaints were lodged when Max turned against a refugee from Iraq. The TV regulator said that there were 139 complaints which ‘related to the racial violence storyline’.
Producer Iain MacLeod said of the storyline when it begun: ‘Overall, Max’s story is one about the grooming of a vulnerable teenager at a point where he’s feeling most alienated and disenfranchised.
‘The story will encompass the ‘traditional’ recruitment techniques of extremists groups, and we’ll see Max befriended in person by older, mentor-like figures that will give him a sense of loyalty and brotherhood.’
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
