An 11-year-old boy is fighting for life in hospital after he was struck by a train in suburban Adelaide during the morning rush hour.

The boy was hit at Tambelin Railway Station in Evanston Gardens, northern Adelaide, shortly before 8.15am (ACDT) on Tuesday morning.

The Year 7 student suffered critical injuries, including a head laceration, and was rushed to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Police say the child is conscious and breathing.

In a message to parents, Head of Trinity College Nick Hately said the boy was struck by the train while crossing Tambelin Railway Station.

‘The incident occurred before school and a number of Trinity students and staff witnessed this event,’ he said.

‘The student received prompt first aid and emergency responders were quickly on the scene.’

The principal said the incident had ‘deeply saddened’ the school community and asked people keep the student in their prayers.

He confirmed counselling would be available to students and teachers.

University students Sophie Shepley and Morgan Taylor, both 18, witnessed the incident, Adelaide Now reports.

‘The train stopped and people were running up and banging on the door,’ Ms Shepley said.

‘They were getting everyone’s attention to let people know someone’s been hit. It was really confusing and we didn’t know what to do.’

Ms Shepley said that from her position on the train she could see the boy, who was still moving and appeared to be conscious.
