A brave Mexican rescue dog has died while searching through rubble for earthquake survivors in Turkey.
Proteo had been dispatched to Turkey as part of a huge international mission in the wake of the devastating earthquake that has so far claimed more than 35,000 lives.
The Mexican Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Sunday, February 12: ‘Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you fulfilled the Mexican Army’s mission.’
It continued: ‘The members of the Mexican Army and Air Force deeply regret the loss of our great companion, the dog ‘Proteo’, you fulfilled your mission as a member of the Mexican Delegation in the search and rescue of our brothers in Turkey. We are proud of you.’
It is not yet clear how Proteo died, but he is reported to have spent several days carrying out crucial work searching for survivors in disaster areas.

One of the soldiers taking part in the rescue operations in Turkey reportedly said: ‘I want to tell you that I am proud of you, because you have always been a strong dog, a dog worker who never gave up.’
Proteo was one of ten dogs sent from Mexico to Turkey to help with the rescue of earthquake survivors.
On social media people have praised Proteo for his efforts, but some demanded more details about the circumstances of the brave rescue dog’s passing.
A picture was posted on social media purportedly showing Proteo lying in the boot of a car with what looks like an IV in his front leg, saying: ‘He has completed the mission’.
So far, the Mexican MoD had not elaborated on how the dog died, with Mexican media reporting that it was while it was searching the rubble for survivors.
Emergency workers are battling against the clock to save people from the rubble, with the international community sending in numerous experts to assist.
At least 35,000 people have been killed in the earthquakes that devastated large areas of Turkey and Syria last week.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck early on Monday morning in southern Turkey, devastating the south of the country and northern Syria.
A second earthquake of 7.6 magnitude hit the same region again at 11:24am local time on Monday, causing even more damage.
