Ebanie Bridges says ‘there’s nothing like shutting up a bully’ after demolishing fellow Aussie Shannon O’Connell to retain her IBF bantamweight world title and dethrone the ‘queen of Australian boxing’ with a stunning performance on Sunday.

The pair clashed in the biggest fight in the history of Australian women’s boxing as the co-main event for Josh Warrington‘s IBF featherweight title bout against Luis Alberto Lopez.

O'Connell came out swinging, but it was Bridges (pictured landing a right hand on her opponent) who dominated the bout by flooring her opponent in the third and later earning the stoppage with a brutal barrage of punches in the eighth round

The showdown had turned into a grudge match months beforehand with O’Connell branding her rival a ‘skanky stripper’ due to her habit of wearing lingerie at her pre-fight weigh-ins.

The 39-year-old also tried to intimidate Bridges when they met face-to-face in Leeds on Thursday, telling her ‘you’re f**ked, b***h’ – only to have her opponent laugh in her face.

O’Connell also insulted Bridges over her weight before the bout, describing her as a ‘fat c***’ before they stood on the scales.

Bridges has spoken in the past about her hatred of bullies – and took to social media after the bout to relish in victory.

‘That’s how it’s done, nothing like shutting up a bully – so satisfying,’ she wrote on Instagram.

Other Australian boxers echoed her sentiments on social media, such as Commonwealth Games medallist Taylah Robertson, who commented on Instagram: ‘This was soooo satisfying to watch such a nasty human get her head punched in. @ebanie_bridges you are the queen of Australian boxing it’s about time you shut this bully up!!!’

Professional boxer Lauren Parker also commented: ‘Absolutely smashed it. Shut O’Connell up good and proper! So good after the s*** she’s given her in the run up,’

Bridges spoke after to the fight about how uniquely spiteful this encounter with O’Connell was.

‘I’m not usually disrespectful to my opponent but she was so disrespectful to me the whole time. So I can’t really give her that much respect – she can hit but. She can bang, ‘ said Bridges.

‘She came, she was hungry, she was fierce. But I was better, and that’s why I’m the champion.

‘I knew it was going to be the hardest fight of my career, and it was.

‘Team skanky stripper forever!’
