Australia cop a BRUTAL lashing on Twitter after their capitulation in India as Pat Cummins’ side are handed the worst possible start to their tour of the subcontinent: ‘Simply outplayed’

Australia have come under fire on Twitter following their capitulation in India, with Pat Cummins side handed a major wake up call on the subcontinent.

Having breezed past West Indies and South Africa over the summer, confidence was high among the touring party ahead of a big year with a four-Test series in India before the Ashes in a few months.

However, the tourists were taught a lesson by their rivals in Nagpur, who coasted to a comfortable victory by an innings and 132 runs on Saturday.

Unsurprisingly, the manner of Australia’s humiliation has stirred debate on social media, and it doesn’t make good reading for a side that complained of a ‘doctored pitch’ before a ball was bowled – only for India to score more on the same pitch in one innings than the Aussies did in both of theirs.

‘As is common practice, Australia’s second innings will be once again played on the doctored wicket instead of the road India got to bat on,’ podcaster Ian Higgins said.

An India fan said: ‘Can Australian fans please realise that Australia don’t simply play well in India. Haven’t for a long time. Stop with the pitch tampering allegations. We were simply outplayed.’

‘Australia have had some disasters in India over the last 15 years but this might be the worst of the lot considering the hype coming in,’ another Twitter user said.

‘All that outside noise, hue and cry over the pitch… Nagpur test has turned out pretty embarrassing for Australia… sheer incompetence vs India,’ a fourth account posted.

But Wisden editor Ben Gardner saw the funny side, tweeting: ‘I wouldn’t worry, Australia are just following the India method of getting smashed in the first Border-Gavaskar Test before staging a comeback.

‘Expecting Cummins to fly home after this game and a net bowler – maybe the Ashwin lookalike – to bowl them to victory at Ahmedabad.’
