Calls to boycott EFTPOS-only restaurants as Aussie reality star reveals why she’ll never eat at Nando’s again after it banned cash payments

Married At First Sight star Hayley Vernon has slammed a popular restaurant chain that went cashless in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like many businesses, Nando’s Australia announced in 2020 it would no longer be accepting cash payments over hygiene concerns and to limit the interaction between employees and customers.

But by refusing cash as a method of payment across its Australian restaurants, the South African-based company has angered some long-time patrons.

Vernon called out Nando’s on Instagram on Thursday, saying the move was harmful to vulnerable Australians.

‘Nando’s has stopped taking cash. This will be the last Nando’s meal I eat,’ the 32-year-old wrote.

‘Cash is so important to keep in a society. Without cash we limit access to basics to those in impoverished circumstances, like the homeless.’

She continued, ‘This is bulls**t and you should do better, Nando’s. I will not support a cashless society or businesses that won’t take cash.’

In 2020, Nando’s announced it would only be accepting EFTPOS and gift cards as payment across its Australian stores.

‘Like many food businesses, we’ve moved to cashless payments to limit the handling of money in our restaurants,’ the company tweeted.

‘This supports our heightened hygiene protocols in the wake of Covid-19 and is an extra measure to protect both our customers and our staff.

‘We appreciate this is a big transition and really apologise for any inconvenience caused. Thank you for your understanding as we work together to keep our community safe.’

Nando’s website states it only accepts digital and card payments for online orders.

‘We currently accept all major credit cards, Paypal, Google Pay and Apple Pay for online orders,’ a notice reads.

‘You can also use Nando’s gift cards or your PERi-Perks points, provided you have enough accrued points to cover the entire order cost.’

Vernon’s boycott of Nando’s comes after she went on a rant earlier this week after hearing several people refer to ‘Halloween candy’ while trick-or-treating.

‘What the f**k are you all calling lollies and bars of chocolate “candy”?’ she wrote on her Instagram Stories.

‘I’m dying at the sheep complex on most people copying and paraphrasing American terms,’ she added.

Hayley noted that no ordinary Australian uses ‘candy’ in general conversation.

‘Sure so what your telling me is that you send your husband to the shops to “pick up some candy”? Get f**ked,’ she said.
