The ultimate holiday stuff-up: Australian’s Eastern Europe holiday surprise for his friend goes wrong due to similar-sounding cities – and they realise far too late
- Aussie man booked the wrong flights for surprise trip
- He bought tickets for Bucharest instead of Budapest
- Traveler decided to make light of the travel mishap
An Australian man who planned a surprise holiday with a female friend has been humiliated online after he mistakenly booked flights to the wrong country.Ā
Sophie Alice was delighted when Ben Kennedy flew halfway around the world to visit her and then announced he had booked them a bonus trip last weekend.Ā Ā
Ben had intended to whisk Sophie away to the Hungarian capital Budapest but mistakenly bought tickets to the similarly named Romanian capital Bucharest – almost 900km away.Ā
The pair decided to make the best of the situation, producing a TikTok video captioned:Ā ‘When you thought you had booked flights to Budapest’.Ā
In the video, which has received over four million views, Sophie is seen standing on the tarmac about to board a RyanAir plane to Romania.Ā

Asked repeatedly online whether they went ahead with the trip, Sophie answered: ‘Yes we went, of course we went, it was great.’
‘It was amazing, I’ve got a lot of videos to show from Romania so follow along and you’ll see. But yeah, absolutely brilliant, loved it.’Ā

‘Bucharest is one of the wildest party places totally underrated,’ a third said.
