Police have killed the 18-year-old gunman that killed as many as 14 children and wounded several others after he opened fire inside a Texas elementary school following a shootout with border patrol agents.

Up to 14 elementary school children were shot dead on Tuesday after a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde after he exchanged gunfire with border patrol agents, police confirmed. 

The unidentified 18-year-old gunman, who police said was killed, barricaded himself in the school, sending the campus and all other schools in the district into lockdown before he was apprehended by police. 

Uvalde Memorial Hospital confirmed that two children were brought in dead on arrival and that they were treating several more following a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, KSAT.com reported.

In total, thirteen children are being treated at the Uvalde Memorial emergency room as well as a 45-year-old man who suffered a ‘graze, hospital spokesman Tom Nordwick told USA Today.  

Police have not confirmed any injuries or fatalities but Uvalde Memorial said they were ‘currently caring for several students in the ER’ and asked that immediate family of injured students report to the hospital’s cafeteria.

University Health San Antonio confirmed they received a child whose condition is currently unknown and a 66-year-old woman who is critical condition.

New video from the chaotic scene shows police arriving to the school campus with their guns in hand and one video shared online appears to show the suspected gunman approach the school while what sounds like gunfire is going off in the background. 

‘There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary. Law enforcement is on site,’ The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said. ‘Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus. As soon as more information is gathered it will be shared.’

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told Fox News that shots were fired offsite and that after shooting one person the gunman ran to the school where he remained barricaded.
