At the end of one of the most controversial weeks in Australian swimming, Cody Simpson was picked to be part of the national team.

And on Monday, the pop star-turned-swimming sensation shared the moment he learned he’d be going to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this winter.

In a candid video posted to Instagram, the ex-boyfriend of Miley Cyrus clapped his hand over his mouth in shock as he read the text telling him he’d made the elite squad, before leaning back into the arms of girlfriend Emma McKeon.

The proud golden girl of Australian swimming embraced the 25-year-old in a sweet moment for the couple.

Cody captioned the post, ‘When you get the text that you’ve made your first Australian team.’

‘Last night I was selected to represent Australia at my first Commonwealth Games,’ continued the On My Mind singer.

Cody added, ‘I was holding my breath all week after the 100m fly final and this is the moment I found out.’

They both shielded their gazes behind dark shades for the outing.

The Queenslander looked to have booked himself a spot at the worlds in the 100m butterfly after finishing third in the event at the national swimming championships in Adelaide behind Kyle Chalmers and winner Matt Temple.

Australia can only field two representatives and Cody was expected to make it because Kyle would drop out due to his busy schedule and need to preserve his body after picking up serious injuries and undergoing surgery.

However, Kyle subsequently changed his mind, insisting he will compete in the 100m butterfly at the worlds in Budapest next month.

He was a shock absentee at from Sunday’s ceremony announcing the Australian swim team, citing the need of taking break from the spotlight for mental health reasons.

‘The last few days have been difficult for Kyle, both mentally and emotionally,’ a Swimming Australia spokesman said.

‘He believes it’s in the best interest of his mental health to remain in Port Lincoln with his family for the next few days. Swimming Australia fully supports his decision.’

Kyle and Cody have dominated the headlines, since the former backflipped on his decision to skip the 100m butterfly at the world championships, ending the latter’s hopes of competing in the event.

The move immediately led to speculation Kyle could have been motivated by the fact Cody is dating his ex, swimming sensation Emma.
